Personality
Nicholas is a schemer. True, his father had wanted him to become more of a diplomat and long term planner, but it became rapidly apparent to Nicholas at a young age just what he could control and what he could not control. While he was growing up and receiving his thorough education, Nicholas has also been fascinated with just how his plans and the plans of those around him could be changed with the careful manipulation of certain factors. To say that Nicholas is manipulative would be something he would flatly deny to your face, but he knows that is exactly what he’s doing. After all, didn’t a good scheme often involve a touch of manipulation? It is not necessarily a bad thing in Nicholas’s eyes to do so, so long as the end goal is achieved and the futures of his family and the island are secured.
Fortunately for most of the world, his mother ensured that Nicholas wasn’t heartless in his schemes and goals. He had a strong love for his mother and he does genuinely care for each of his siblings. Indeed, he typically makes sure that his siblings are safe in his schemes and does his best not to take overt advantage of them. This is especially true of his dear twin Kathryn, who keeps him rooted to reality and reminds him of the gentler side of the world.
In addition, Kathryn has always helped him with dreaded numbers. Nicholas always argued that he was far better with people than he was with numbers. People could be read and interpreted through a myriad of clues, but numbers, much to his frustration, eluded him. Fortunately, Nicholas has swallowed his pride enough to allow either his sister or the steward of Montenoire to handle such dreaded things for him.
The death of his mother and the withdrawal of his father from public life told Nicholas more than ever that needed to be prepared to take over the house. Fortunately for all of them, he was quite adept at management of the vineyard and ensuring that the trade deals his family worked hard to obtain will hold true. However, there is an ambition with Nicholas that cannot be denied. Arthur Remington may have been content with life on Montenoire, but Nicholas wanted their name to be more widespread. Indeed, the name of Remington and Montenoire would garner all the respect in the world it could muster.
History
Born in September to Arthur and Amina, Nicholas was the second child born into the immediate family and the heir to Montenoire. This was a position that impressed upon him since a young age, especially Arthur started his children’s educations as soon as possible. Like the rest of his siblings, Nicholas received a thorough education in reading, writing, arithmetic and managing the vineyard. As he grew, Nicholas also took an interest in philosophy and learning about the art of negotiation. Not only did Nicholas strive to become a good diplomat, but a capable swordsman, rider and excellent schemer. However, his lack of skill when it came to numbers severely hampered him. It was only through the greater skill of his sister that he managed to muster through.
For the most part, Nicholas’s younger years were uneventful save for his siblings being born. A good relationship was had with them, along with his cousins. Indeed, Nicholas came to treat his cousins like additional brothers and sisters since his father had impressed upon him that they were all in for the advancement of House Remington together. With a combination of Arthur’s leadership, Thomas’s military skills and Patrick’s mercantilism, Nicholas felt confident that the future of the Remington line would be a successful one.
The death of his mother and two cousins were something of a turning point for Nicholas. With his father retreating from public life, Nicholas found himself taking on more and more responsibilities for the House. He found himself rather blessed to have a sisters like Kathryn and Charlotte to see them through that difficult time. Handling diplomatic and trade matters, initially with the help of his cousins, he grew more and more confident in his abilities.
With his father’s retirement more and more likely, Nicholas has started to look toward the future of the island. His ambition was not selfish, however. The health of his precious twin was paramount to him. Rumors of better medicines and better climes of Demeria were looking more and more fruitful. With his father’s command and blessing, the two of them traveled to their neighbor across the sea. Whatever they would find, Nicholas was certain to make the best of it for the both of them.

Time marched forward. The world turned. The sun rose and set. Lives went on. Arthur felt like a spectator looking from the outside in. Ever since Amina had left his life, he could never shake the feeling. He felt detached from the world. It was a sensation that was difficult to explain to anyone and not for lack of trying. As much as he wanted to keep to himself, he knew it wasn’t fair to himself or his family.
He needed to know if Nicholas was prepared for the Ducal coronet. He wanted something better for Kathryn than a quiet life of being an herbalist. He wanted to cure her ails. Whispers of highly skilled healers living in Demeria had come to him over the years. It had also been nigh on decades since there had been a formal relationship between Montenoire and Demeria.
Why not?
Nicholas and Kathryn were called to his study for a private conversation. The usual pleasantries, such as they were, were exchanged. Once done, Arthur got to the heart of the matter. “I have been doing a great deal of thinking. I would like to send you to Demeria.” He paused to let it sink in before going on with his explanation. “Nicholas, I feel it is nigh time that we reestablish diplomatic ties between our nations. I want you to spearhead that movement. You can take whomever you deem to be suitable advisers with you.”
Arthur’s worldly gaze fixed on Kathryn next. “Dear Kathryn, I’d like you to go with your brother, both to help your brother and to help yourself. I know you have heard the rumors regarding their herbs and medicines. I feel it would be a good opportunity for you.” He leaned back to watch their reactions.

Nicholas had been discussing matters with the head vintner of the family when the summons from his father arrived. It certainly arrested his attention, since summons from his father were becoming an increasingly rare event. Whatever it was, it was sure to be important. With a promise to continue their conversation later, Nicholas moved out of the lower portions of the castle toward the upper. When he spotted Kathryn headed the same direction, he paused for a moment. It affected both of them? What plans for Kathryn did father have in mind?
Without hesitation, his hand slid over his sister’s. They entered and listened. In contrast to Kathryn’s fear, Nicholas felt a surge of excitement and determination. Travel to Demeria? Open up ties? Seek a medicine for his sister? Yes, he would answer this challenge with aplomb! However, he controlled himself, especially when he felt his sister’s tighter grip. She did not enjoy leaving home. It would be difficult for her. He squeezed her hand in reassurance. She would not be alone.
“I will not disappoint you or our family, Father,” he promised him with a nod. Already, he was thinking of whom to take… and what they would find in Demeria. Would a cure for Kathryn’s ails be there? Could the name of Remington and Montenoire be spread? So many possibilities and Nicholas was eager to explore them all.
