Personality
Second-born, Kathryn Remington is equal parts Arthur and Amina. Possessing her father's fair looks and his dry sense of humor, she is a quiet romantic, given to dreams of beauty and flights of fancy. Fond of books, music and dance, she is a rare combination of feet on the ground, but head in the clouds. She is also deeply faithful, once considering life in the Church but reminded that as a Remington daughter, she may need to make a marriage... if she remains strong enough.
Yet there is wit to her, a need to see the silver lining in every cloud and an unshakable form of serenity that comes from being prepared. She is a thoroughgoing pragmatic, ever hoping for the best but rooted enough in reality to know that life doesn’t always work out the way you hope. So she lays her plans with care, allowing for contingencies.
In the absence of her mother, Kathryn tends to the household as lady of the keep, leaving her siblings free to travel and promote the family wines. She is for the hearth and the home, keeping the fires lighted for her family. A skilled cook and baker, Kathryn – no nickname has ever been applied to her – can usually be found in one of four places: the kitchens, her father's study, the gardens or the villages, attending to those in need under the watchful eyes of the priests and laypeople.
She is a quiet girl, reserved and cordial, but she carries an air of fragility about her. Her twin is the hardy one, the pillar of strength both physical and moral, and she does not like to be parted from him. When it was decided that Nicholas should travel to Demeria, it was equally understood that Kathryn would go as well. It is no secret that the two are searching for better medicines for her and harboring some hope that the gentler climate will do her some good.
History
Born a handful of minutes after her twin brother, Kathryn came into the world with her hand on Nicholas's heel. The midwife took one look at the second child to emerge from the womb and slowly shook her head as the parents looked on, gripping each other in distress. The tiny babe was too frail, too delicate, gasping for breath in the midwife's hands. Surely this little mite could not live for long, let alone thrive, but her mother and father refused to relinquish hope. They patiently cared for their daughter, tending to her with loving hands and fervent hope.
As she grew, Kathryn remained small but contrary to the midwife's prediction, began to thrive. She learned to walk, though talking came more slowly. Nicholas spoke on her behalf, and in return, Kathryn helped him with his lessons. He was bright, healthy, strong, vibrant... but those pesky sums knew how to do him in. The two helped each other to survive childhood, she often said. Where Charlotte was their mother's favorite, the tiny girl was the apple of her father's eye, often to be found snuggled trustingly in the crook of his arm, riding on the saddle before him or seated on his lap while she dozed.
When she was not at her lessons, she was told to rest, to sew or wind wool, but Kathryn found it fun to sneak into the kitchens. There, under the indulgent eye of the cooks, she could be found dusty with flour as she played in the doughs, or laughing breathlessly in trying to turn the spit with the scullion, or perched on a high stool out of the knives' way as they chopped, carved and diced in preparation for meals. Given herbs to learn, she enjoyed adding the seasonings that made the Remington table a highly touted experience, enhanced all the more by their wines, for which the family was renowned.
Never a strong girl, Kathryn silently thanked the God for the health he bestowed on her, especially after the passing of her mother. Care had to be taken not to overly tax herself, nor to engage in strenuous physical activity, else she was left drained, exhausted and out of breath with an aching chest. So long as she took precautions, she was able to appear normal, if delicate, living quietly in the castle that was the heart of Montenoire. However, her father, brother and older sister have agreed that if she is to be married, a change is in order. Word has reached them that in Demeria, there are physicians who can treat her condition and restore her health; also, it is believed the gentler climate of Demeria will spare her another winter's sickness.
Timid and somewhat frightened, she has nonetheless agreed to travel with Nicholas under the guise of opening negotiations with Demeria for trade and other matters of state. What lies ahead is unknown to her, but Kathryn has promised to be brave for her father's sake.

Time marched forward. The world turned. The sun rose and set. Lives went on. Arthur felt like a spectator looking from the outside in. Ever since Amina had left his life, he could never shake the feeling. He felt detached from the world. It was a sensation that was difficult to explain to anyone and not for lack of trying. As much as he wanted to keep to himself, he knew it wasn’t fair to himself or his family.
He needed to know if Nicholas was prepared for the Ducal coronet. He wanted something better for Kathryn than a quiet life of being an herbalist. He wanted to cure her ails. Whispers of highly skilled healers living in Demeria had come to him over the years. It had also been nigh on decades since there had been a formal relationship between Montenoire and Demeria.
Why not?
Nicholas and Kathryn were called to his study for a private conversation. The usual pleasantries, such as they were, were exchanged. Once done, Arthur got to the heart of the matter. “I have been doing a great deal of thinking. I would like to send you to Demeria.” He paused to let it sink in before going on with his explanation. “Nicholas, I feel it is nigh time that we reestablish diplomatic ties between our nations. I want you to spearhead that movement. You can take whomever you deem to be suitable advisers with you.”
Arthur’s worldly gaze fixed on Kathryn next. “Dear Kathryn, I’d like you to go with your brother, both to help your brother and to help yourself. I know you have heard the rumors regarding their herbs and medicines. I feel it would be a good opportunity for you.” He leaned back to watch their reactions.
------
The summons came unexpectedly, drawing her from the kitchens as she oversaw the final preparations for the evening meal. Kathryn removed her apron and set it on its hook, moving carefully through the halls towards her father's study. As she approached, she noted her twin's presence, feeling a surge of reassurance. Whatever the reason for the request, Nicholas would be there with her to hear it. A faint smile formed at the sight of her brother, her hand instinctively reaching for his as they stepped inside and sat at their father's request.
She stared at her father when he lowered the proverbial boom. He wanted her to leave home. To leave Montenoire, and their family for this place called Demeria? Kathryn's hand tightened on Nicholas's, her knuckled whitening with a swift surge of anxiety. A slow, wooden nod acknowledged what their father said about the physicians of Demeria, knowing he wanted only the best for her. To see her restored to a level of health previously denied her was one of Arthur Remington's personal crusades. Swallowing the lump that rose in her throat, she couldn't summon the words to argue or protest.
She looked at her brother, curious to know what his reaction was. For her part, she was nervous but admittedly a little excited. To travel was a dream Kathryn doubted she would ever realize, let alone so far. Lifting her eyes to her father's, she managed a small smile. "I will go, as you wish. But I will miss you terribly, Father." So long as Nicholas was with her, she would not be so afraid... and perhaps she would discover something new and exciting in Demeria.
