SEBASTIAN DE WINTER
Nickname – N/A
Gender - Male
Age - 19
Birthday - December 10, 1519
Noble House - de Winter
Skills - Mathematics, architecture, engineering/construction
Play By - Jonas Armstrong
Immediate Family Members - Ramsey de Winter (father, deceased); Lirianne de Winter (mother, deceased); Jasen, Christopher, Katalin (siblings)
Personality
Those who meet Sebastian would never have guessed that he was retiring in his youth. Drawing words out of him was a significant challenge back in a day where he found more comfort in his books and observations about the world than he did with people. Of all his family members, he was closest to both his mother and sister, Katalin. It would not be until he attended University at the age of 13 that he would finally start coming out of his shell.
Now at 19, Sebastian has discovered that he is a naturally cheerful and uplifting man. It was rare to see Sebastian without some kind of smile on his face or a light in his eye. Whenever Sebastian gets onto what he considers a fascinating topic, he becomes energized, excitable and, at times, hard to follow. Highly observant and engaging, Sebastian believes that every person deserves a chance to prove their worth. Even the surliest person can be made into a friend, or at least, that is what Sebastian believes.
In a seeming contradiction, it was the loss of his parents that brought this change about this change in personality. Upon their passing, he remembered a critical element of his upbringing. Sebastian had always been naturally gregarious, but it only came out to close family members. Lirianne had worked to bring that out of him in her own gently encouraging manner for she did not want her son to be a shy recluse all of his life. It was through the process of grieving his parents’ death and the help of his siblings that brought that beautiful personality back out. Life was too short, and there was a whole world to see.
To this day, Sebastian is still close with Jasen, Christopher and Katalin, especially the latter. Sebastian is close to attaining the title of Master from the university, and upon doing so, he intends to assist his Lord of a brother in making Oakdale one of the architectural marvels of Demeria.
History
The story of the caterpillar transforming into the butterfly suits no one better than Sebastian de Winter, metaphorically speaking. Born to Ramsey and Lirianne de Winter, Sebastian was the third son of a steadily growing family. When he was but a lad, one could hardly notice that he was actually there. Sebastian was not unhappy child, far from it, but he was rather shy. Whenever there happened to be a small social function at Oakleigh Hall, Sebastian would spend most of his time either hiding behind his father’s leg or his mother’s skirts. Sebastian was perfectly capable of speaking, holding conversation and being polite, but one had to draw it out of him.
Sebastian often chose books as his solace, as well as making observations about the world around him. Construction particularly fascinated him, as well as the various machines that people used in their everyday lives to make them easier. Sebastian often spent his time figuring out how everything worked and why it worked the way it did. Indeed, his tutor had great difficulty getting Sebastian to focus on anything else! While Sebastian excelled in mathematics and natural sciences, he suffered in penmanship and history. Fortunately, he had a love for the written word all the same. It would not be uncommon for his room to be covered with scattered pieces of parchment, several them with designs of buildings, houses, castles, and machines. One could even say that Sebastian was and still is an excellent drawer, but he gently dismissed such compliments. He was not good at drawing, just very good at putting lines exactly where they need to go.
By the time Sebastian had turned 13, he had been accepted into university. Sebastian still remembers to this day how proud his parents were, knowing that he would be properly encouraged to follow his passions: architecture, construction and engineering. It was his ultimate goal to build an architectural marvel that would last the centuries within Demeria, but he has been very closely guarded about it. Not even his own siblings know of his grand design due to a combination of protectiveness and uncertainty of its success.
The University also gave him the opportunity to come out of his shell, but he briefly retreated back into it due to the unfortunate passing of his father and then his mother shortly after. Their deaths devastated him. It was only his brothers and sister that pulled him from the brink of despair. To this day, the siblings are closer than ever, especially with Katalin. Having pulled each other out of their dark sadness, Jasen assumed full command of the family, Christopher pursued his military career and Katalin went on with her training to become a healer. Sebastian continued his own studies and projects, the day in which he would be declared a master drawing closer and closer.

After a few days at the University, Sebastian could hardly believe everything that he had seen already. It was amazing and astounding to him. Even though he wanted to start at the university in Oakdale, the Master of Engineering was an sabbatical and had travelled to Linten to study their new cathedral. Sebastian had only learned a little bit about it, but he’d try to learn what he could. Regardless, Sebastian was forced to attend University in Triadon for the time being, and study under the Master of Engineering found there. However, it did not take overly long for home sickness to settle in. One night, settled into his room, he decided to write a letter. However, his first thought was not to his mother, but rather his sister.
Dearest Katalin,
I have only been here a few days and I have already learned so much. I didn’t realize how it was possible to keep all of this amazing knowledge in one place. The University is beautiful, too. The design of the buildings here are a perfect blend of elegance and practicality. Never had I seen such a fusion of art and engineering in one place. It astounds me. It inspires me. It intimidates me. I wish you were here to see what I mean.
Triadon is as I remembered it: big, crowded and busy. I find myself missing the tranquility that Oakdale afforded me, but at the same time, I am so very excited to be here. If only I could have my cake and eat it, too, no? Speaking of cakes, could you ask Cook to send some my way? I do miss them and having a little bit of home would be lovely right now.
I think I have made a friend, too: a young man by the name of Samuel Easton, the son of Lord Easton. We are of similar temperament and share many views on life. It’s been a relief to find someone else that understands how I act and think. I do miss you, though, and I look forward to when we can reunite. I hope that is much sooner rather than later.
Write back and I hope you are well.
All my love,
Sebastian
