“I’m telling you, she should have been born a man. It’s how she acts! Always riding on a horse , getting in fights, swinging a sword about, and her manners! I swear, she’s belched in my presence! Her voice has a harsh edge to it, and there’s nothing … I don’t know… soft about her. By the Triad, how is she going to get herself a husband if she acts so? How does she expect to carry the line on? She’s the last one. Doesn’t she realize her responsibility?”
“I’d rather a leader of the House know how to put up a fight than any desired ‘softness,’ my lord. She didn’t ask for this. You and I both know that it was her brother that was to rule. They’re both lost to us. Lady Fontaine is who we have and I ask you this? Has she led us down to destruction? Are we fairing worse than during Hector Fontaine’s rule? And she has the loyalty of the people. Triad knows she fought for it. She was destined to be a Knight of the Realm, not the Countess of Wooldale. None of us are where we want to be. But look at her. She’s taking it on. She’s not backing down. We have a Lady and a warrior on our side. She’ll not see Wooldale suffer. And I, for one, will support her however I can.”
The words exchanged between her exasperated steward and loyal marshal offer a glimpse into Tamara Fontaine. She could never been accused of being too feminine since the concept had always been rather awkward to her. Being fitted for fine gowns, wearing makeup, or other ‘feminine’ arts were uninteresting to her. Despite her mother’s best efforts, Tamara shrugged any attempts to make her into a proper woman.
As a result, Tamara Fontaine can be abrasive, blunt, and forward in her speech. Yet, there is a gentle spirit lurking within her. This spirit comes out during critical moments of sympathy. A soft spoken word, a tender reassurance and praiseworthy encouragement is not rare from her. Indeed, Tamara seems to be a walking contradiction. She will often declare rather proudly that she is a warrior at heart, but her closest friends will frequently point out it doesn’t completely suit her. They feel words such as sentinel or guardian are better suited.
Indeed, Tamara is a Knight of the Realm through and through. She is compassionate, stalwart, determined and true to her people, her Duke and King. To be fair, she has much to learn about leadership and many of the finer points elude her. She knows she must be ever watchful against Arton and poachers of her land’s livestock. She knows she is the last of her line. The last duty is one that terrifies her the most. Certainly, she’s aware of a peripheral attraction to men but she has no knowledge of how to properly interact with one. She would rather challenge a man to a dual than parry flirtatious words.
While she has her rough edges, she has a heart of gold. No one will find a more steadfast or fiercely loyal friend. Though she shifts uncomfortably under the weight of the Countess’s crown, she nonetheless wears it proudly for she is a true woman of Wooldale and no one can tell her otherwise.
History
Tamara was the second and last child of Hector and Clarice Fontaine, born a few years after her brother Nicholas. From the start, Tamara was a rambunctious youth. She did not learn to crawl, she learned to shimmy. She did not learn to walk, she learned to run. She was a challenge for her all of her caretakers since she seemed to delight in being able to outrun and outmaneuver them. The corporeal punishments did not seem to discourage her, either since the joy of victory was greater than the pain of punishment.
This troublesome quality only seemed to get worse as she got older. Aimless running was replaced by constant adventures throughout Vertacre Castle and the surrounding hillside. It was not uncommon for her to return home well past dark when the shepherds would coax her along. Clarice did her best to make a woman out of Tamara. Everything from dress fittings, makeup sessions, lessons regarding the womanly arts were rejected and even fought against nearly tooth and nail. Attempts to restrict her movements ultimately failed, as well.
When Tamara was supposed to be learning about embroidery, she was receiving swordplay lessons from the marshal. When she was supposed to be fitted for a dress, she was out riding her horse and racing against some of the guards. While her tutor waited for her, she was out exploring some aspect of Wooldale she’d never seen before. It was during these adventures that she met a knight from the Order of the Escarbouche. She was immediately enamored by the life he led, the qualities he possessed and the prowess through which he displayed those qualities. Chivalry, it seemed, rung true with her. In a way, Clarice got she wanted. At the age of ten, Tamara decided that she would not be a lady of Wooldale but a dame of the realm.
Hector, at first, was strongly opposed. Fortunately for Tamara, the knight beseeched the man on her behalf. He reminded Hector that she possessed all of the raw qualities needed of a knight: independence, strength, determination and a just heart. She would learn the Code of Chivalry and be a good woman, a good dame. Hector, comforted by the fact that his son was betrothed to a fine woman, decided to let Tamara do as she wished. Clarice never forgave him for this decision.
At that point, Tamara became a page to Sir Alistair of Fairfield, one of their finest knights. Through the years, she learned to care for horses, tend to armor, and the basics of personal combat. She also learned history, mathematics, strategy, logistics and the fundamentals of leadership. Above all else, Alistair stressed that her sword would always be her last resort. She was never to be careless in letting her blade from the scabbard.
When she reached the age of eighteen, Tamara had bloomed into a woman. She was easily a head taller than most other females of the country, thanks to her father’s rather tall qualities. While she would never be as fully strong as a man, she was quick and possessed great finesse. She could ride a horse with the best of them and her swordplay was of excellent quality. One could also say she had shifted from an awkward looking girl into a beautiful woman, but she would swiftly scoff at such claims.
Her hard earned skills were put to the test when Sir Alistair and she worked to put an end to a fairly successful group of poachers. Sir Alistair felt that her true skill could be found within infantry leadership and upon her promotion to apprentice knight, he encouraged her down this path. At the age of 25, she earned her spurs and was granted the title of Dame Tamara of Wooldale.
By this time, Nicholas had satisfied the betrothal and had married the daughter of a baroness. However, the marriage and the future of Wooldale was tragically cut short when he and his father were killed in a hunting accident. A boar had bested them. Tamara, who chose not to the attend the wedding in favor of going to Triadon to meet with the Knight Commander, received the news while in Fairfield. Her future was forever altered.
No longer could she be a Knight of the Realm. Instead, Tamara returned home to be conferred the title of Countess. Her mother refused to acknowledge the change. Mother and daughter did not speak for several months, forcing Tamara learn the responsibilities of noble leadership from her steward and marshal. It took her sometime to grow accustomed to her newfound life. Indeed, in some ways, she was still coming to grips with it.
Would she ever have a relationship with her mother? Would she lead Wooldale as effectively as her father? What about the future of her line? Only time would tell.

"My lady, you must go to Triadon at some point. Look, read this. There is an announcement of several tournaments, including a joust! Perhaps they would allow you to participate. It is a wonderful opportunity to present yourself as the Countess and a Knight in one breath. I do not see what you could possibly not gain from doing so."
"You just want me to find a husband, Edward," the Countess gave her a steward a flat look as they continued to walk through the fields. The shepherds had reported an illness befalling some of the sheep and she wanted it to see it for herself. "Besides, I have plenty to worry about here than rubbing elbows with insufferable nobles." She maintaining a fast pace, knowing that the steward was struggling to keep up.
"No, my lady! Not at all!" The older man replied with a winded voice. She started moving faster. "Alright, yes! Yes, that is what I want you for you! That is what I want for this family, damn it!" Finally, unable to keep moving, he stopped and stooped over to brace his hands against his knees.
To her credit, Tamara stopped, turned and gazed at her steward thoughtfully. "I should do this to you more often, Edward. You speak far more honestly this way." A calloused hand came up to rub at the back of her neck. She knew Edward was right, damn him. A sigh escaped explosively out of her while spreading her hands out wide. "Alright, alright, fine. I will go. I make no promises, but I will go... and I will try."
"Oh, good. Very good," he let out a sigh of relief and then blinked when Tamara started walking off again. "My lady, we have other-"
"You got what you wanted today, Edward. Don't push it." And with that, she went on about her business.
