Personality
A true Easton, Nathan is a man who studies, and then puts what he has studied into practice. Whether it's the management of his lands, rotating crops or advanced agricultural techniques, his beloved gittern or the intricate and complicated dance of language, he is passionately devoted to learning and the application of what he has learned to improve the quality of life for himself as well as everyone around him.
The son of the Master of Trade has learned well and wisely from his sire, using the bounty of the East to greatest advantage, especially when it comes to his liege lady. The rich grains and other crops serve the Roses well in their business, allowing the Eastons to pay their tithes in goods, rather than coin. Though they are on solid financial ground, the Easton family and Nathan especially tend to be frugal. They prefer their table to be simple yet hearty, their clothing to be well made but unadorned and their horses to be as strong and sound of wind as they are beautiful. Everything in Nathan's life must have a purpose beyond the merely ornamental - ornaments do not keep roofs thatched, walls sturdy or fields irrigated and fertile.
In other words, Nathan Easton is an eminently practical man. That doesn't mean he doesn't laugh or smile; he does, quite often, though his humor tends towards the dry and the intellectual. He isn't one for the slapstick or the silly, and often shies away from those who are inclined to romp and gad about pointlessly.
That being said, Nathan enjoys the company of others who share his love of learning, of experiences and of quieter pursuits. He lights up when he plays the gittern, though he has no voice to speak of - his fingers, in this case, are far more eloquent. Once, as a boy, he considered running away to become a troubadour... but his good sense intervened, reminding him that the life of a traveling minstrel was far from easy. Instead, he is a discreet supporter of bards and minstrels, and is always glad to join with others in making music or providing accompaniment for a singer.
Despite his very sensible demeanor, there lurks a dreamer's heart in Nathan, one who holds hope of a bright future, of a great love or a groundbreaking achievement that will leave his name on the books of Demeria's history forever, his own man.
History
Born on a cool July night in Fourfields Castle, Nathaniel Easton entered the world to quiet blessings. The eldest of what would prove to be a rather large family born to an aging father and a surprisingly young wife, he was in no way, shape or form spoiled as a child. Given love and discipline in equal measure, he was an ordinary child, learning to walk and talk in the normal times, acquiring the standard education for a nobleman's son, and learning what would be expected of him as his father's heir.
When he was ten, he discovered a book in the library that was written in Lintenese, his interest immediately piqued. Taking the book to his tutor, Nathaniel persuaded the man to instruct him in the rudiments of Lintenese, finding the challenge of learning another language a puzzle that proved irresistible. From there, it was only natural to move on to other languages, including Artonese, Ixonian and Sarkozsian. It was soon clear the boy had a gift for study and for languages.
Seeing this, his father - already the King's Master of Trade - arranged for Nathaniel to study for a time in each of the countries, learning the best of their trade goods and their agricultural refinements in order to put them to best use in Demeria. It wasn't espionage; no one ever suspected a boy as pale and scholarly as Nathan to be such a thing. He was merely interested and asked probing questions.
Returning as his father grew more aged, he has taken on the daily tasks of tending the needs of Eastleigh, allowing the senior Easton to groom a potential successor for the role of Master of Trade. Whether that will be his son remains to be seen, but for now, Nathan is more interested in carving out a respectable niche for his House, settling his siblings and quietly involving himself in international affairs. Much can be gleaned when no one knows you speak their language.
What the future holds remains to be seen, but Nathan is prepared for what comes. He is, after all, a practical man.
RP Sample
The library at Eastleigh was easily his favored place in the castle, its contents no real rival to the University but still a respectable array for a private collection. He would miss the quietly busy hours spent behind the desk, busy with the tasks of the barony or pursuing his own studies. However, matters of the barony and of the kingdom called him to Triadon, so to Triadon he would go. The capitol held some appeal for him, as an opportunity to access the University's vast resources of learning, and of course, to further expand his own library.
Nathan left the packing to his man, instead picking up the letter sent to him from his father, requesting him to join the elder in Triadon. He did not fail to notice the handwriting of his sire was growing more shaky and frail; Lord Timothy Easton had not been in his youth when his eldest was born, and it seemed a reminder that his father might feel the shadow of mortality looming over him. The thought sobered Nathan, aware that the loss of his father would be significant, not only to himself but to Demeria. It lent all the more importance for him to depart as soon as possible.
Folding the letter, he tucked it into his doublet and with a final glance around the library, took his leave of the room. Instinct told him it would be some time before he laid eyes on the peaceful haven of a room again. The memory of it would hopefully sustain him as he fulfilled his filial duty. Family came first with Nathan, first and always.
