Personality
A man perceived as solemn, even stern, Spencer Lancaster is deemed an enigma to any who are not members of the Lancaster family. Only to his siblings, children, nieces and nephews does he show any warmth, affection or concern; all others are allies to be cultivated or rivals over whom to triumph.
He takes his role as Duke of Indigane seriously, working diligently to present his family and duchy to the best effect. Perfection is expected of those who bear the name Lancaster, and Spencer drives himself incessantly in that pursuit. In court, he is the consummate gentleman to the ladies since the death of his wife, a frequent participant in debates and witty banter, but his smile almost never reaches his eyes. His face is viewed as a mask from which he seldom emerges.
The truth is, Spencer Lancaster is a quiet, scholarly man with a penchant for good horses and the printed word. Guarding his duchy’s printing works jealously, he has profited greatly from leasing the press and the men to operate it, allowing him to invest in rare volumes. His private library is said to rival the University’s in Triadon, shared with the Indigane branch of the university by his indulgence.
In private, he displays a sly wit and a dry sense of humor, able to laugh and jest easily with his children. He has devoted himself to instilling the need to excel in all three, and planted the seeds of ambition not only in his son and heir, but in his daughter as well. His second son has been quietly urged in the direction of his talents, the better to cover the Lancaster name in glory. To his brothers, Spencer is a source of strength and power, wielding it masterfully in the promotion of House Lancaster.
His one weakness is Fiona Carlisle Lancaster. She is his closest confidante and friend. Any suggestion otherwise draws a flat, unfriendly look. Spencer will not see Fiona’s reputation tarnished by any hint of impropriety and has, in the years since Felice’s death, taken on more than one duel in defense of Fiona’s honor.
History
Born in late July 1504 as the eldest and heir to the duchy of Indigane, Spencer Lancaster was born during the dark time of the moon. To the more superstitious, the omen of such an ill timed birth boded ill for the Duke’s first-born son.
With that black mark hanging over his head, Spencer was a normal boy, spending a great deal of time with his father, the better to learn first-hand the work of ruling an active, profitable Duchy. Given a thorough education, including a year at the university, his active mind welcomed all the knowledge fed into it. A diligent student no matter what the course of study, Spencer used that to provide an example to his younger brothers of what was expected of them. Not that he was a perfect child, not at all. He had a talent for disobedience when engaged in academic pursuits, a disregard for safety when testing the limits of his courage, pushing himself harder and further to see just how good he could be.
At fifteen, he was taken to Court to be introduced, finding a natural niche amongst the courtiers of his own age. There, Spencer met the young Princess Fiona. Her golden, delicate beauty seized him from the first, but it was her wit and intelligence that held his attention. For a time, he believed himself in love with her, though she’d been promised to his brother Martin. Spencer, as ducal heir, could not wed a Carlisle. He accepted that without argument, but remained close to Fiona as friend and like-minded companion.
His father, sensing danger, swiftly concluded Spencer’s betrothal to Felice Ormonde, the daughter of his vassal lord. The two were married quietly, and Felice proved a serene, gracious Duchess and hostess. Spencer did not grow to love his dark-haired wife, but treated her with the dignity, honor and courtesy she merited as a noblewoman and his wife. Rumors of mistresses were given no fuel to feed them, however true they might be. He remained attentive and their first child, Gerald, was born within a year or two of their marriage. Selena and Marlon followed at appropriate times.
Their marriage was a calm one, without scandal or incident, though Felice perished tragically young, trying to bring their fourth child into the world. She was laid to rest with the stillborn babe, a girl. Spencer adopted the proper mourning for a widower, supporting his grieving children appropriately. After a year passed, Gerald and Selena were of an age to be brought to court, and Marlon was ready to enter University. Deeming a change of scenery necessary, he relocated his family to Triadon and worked to maintain Indigane at a distance.
Able to renew his friendship with Fiona and see his children make their marks, Spencer knew he could not stay in Triadon without becoming embroiled in the chaos of Demerian politics. With the King’s increasing illness and subsequent incapacity to rule, the Duke is watching the Court carefully, urging Gerald and Selena to wield their respective influences to gain friends and power in the name of Lancaster. A suitable match will be found for his sons, but Spencer’s hope lies in his daughter, privately hoping to see her seated on the throne beside Prince Riordan instead of Julia St. Claire.
If he is fortunate, the young man will look past his penchant for voluptuous blondes and truly see the jewel that is Serena…

Sitting behind the large desk in his Triadon study, Spencer lifted the report from his steward and studied it with a satisfied nod. The latest numbers for the projected lease of the printing press were in and the Lancasters stood to make a pretty profit on the newest book – a collection of songs and tales praising the late heroes of Demeria. He would have to see a copy was bound in fine leather and gilded as a gift for the Crown Prince from Selena.
Tapping his fingers thoughtfully against the arm of his chair as he set the report down, he let his thoughts turn to his children. Already they were a credit to their name, his oldest son a popular figure amongst the young bucks of the Court. A skilled rider, swordsman and hunter, Gerald had charm, understated wit and charisma. He would be fine, though the boy needed a wife soon. Spencer found his thoughts turning more and more to his neighbors to the north – the Roses had a rather attractive daughter that might do.
Selena settled in well, he noted, though she wasn’t spending as much time around Fiona as he might have hoped. If any lady of the court could provide his daughter the influence and gentle guidance she still needed, it would be she. He would have to see what he could do to foster it. And then there was the problem of that deVere bastard… the man was proving himself a nuisance and a hindrance in equal measure.
He was not going to let anyone, least of all a deVere, ruin his plans for Lancaster and Demeria. The future was simply too important to leave it to chance.
