Personality
Calm, quiet, observant, aloof and manipulative are sufficient words to describe Samantha Rose. These qualities are, in truth, a double edged sword for they have worked for and against her in equal quantity throughout her life. At times, the woman had been quiet when she should have spoken and she had been calm when she should have been angry. Yet, no matter what was flung in her direction, she adheres to these qualities. They have been with her even when she was child and came to fruition as she came of age.
The emotional manipulation took several years to craft, yet she is still working toward perfecting said craft. It is quite fortunate that she does not use this manipulation to unseemly ends. Instead, she uses this emotional manipulation to deflect so called negative emotions away from her and those for whom she cares. If she is confronted with an angry or aggressive individual, she seeks ways to turn that anger back on them and hopefully they will realize the folly of their ways. Samantha also learned early that staying calm in the face of aggression is the best response for the other party always runs out of steam before she does.
This is not to say that Samantha is without her emotions or passions. She does love and care for her own. Her parents and siblings would frequently get into arguments due to their passionate natures, but she remained their steady rock in the face of it all. There is some affection toward her husband and she genuinely cares for his well being. Her true love, however, is toward her own children. There none more precious to her and she truly wishes the best for them.
Samantha also displays great care toward her family's trade of ale, wine, mead and spirit making. She personally inspects all of the crops, the distillation and fermenting process herself, and has become quite the connoisseur of such beverages. By extension, she follows the Rose's family philosophy of showing their vassal houses the path toward prosperity, but she tries not interfere in the management of their own lands unless absolutely necessary.
Part of her calm nature, she claims, is thanks to her devout worship of the Triad and her close relationship with the clergy of her home. They have provided her guidance and have assured her manner of handling various aspects of life to be in line with what the Triad wish to teach humankind. Thus, the presence of the clergy is quite strong in Rosewine and she regularly donates part of her family's profits to churches and acts of charity. This piety has inspired two of her children to follow her path.
History
The House of Rose is renown for its neutrality and general sense of independence. Though they attend Court when needed, as a whole, they prefer to keep to themselves, tend their precious fields of vines, hops, and apiaries, and guide their vassal houses along a productive and stable path. The Roses appreciate the protections afforded by the Carlisle family, but they are also acutely aware that Linten to the north has never truly accepted the Rose's secession. Such rumbles and gripes from the Lintenese royal family provided all the more reason for the Rose's to keep to themselves. This philosophy and way of living had been maintained through the generations, especially since they attained the status as Dukes of Rosewine. That began to change with Adrian Rose.
Born to Adrian and Gweneth Rose, Samantha was the first of several children in the current generation of Roses. Gweneth's red hair and face were passed on to her, along with Adrian's gentle eyes and full smile. As a child, Samantha was quiet and curious, generally calm but clearly happy. Even during the fiercest storms or the occasional argument between parents or siblings, Samantha was and still is a consistently calm presence. Her mother argued that Samantha has always had the patience of saints but could never quite figure out where it came from. Samantha's tutor later informed Gweneth that some people are simply made that way.
While growing up, Samantha was often the arbiter and mediator of peace when it came to the frequent arguments of her family. The Rose, being of Linten, still held the passions native to them. As the years went on, Samantha's skills as a negotiator grew and grew. She eventually learned how to manipulate emotions to suit the situation. A number of times, a situation was resolved or worked out to the family's benefit, by turning an individual's pride or anger in on themselves. Such actions led to more peaceful resolutions than not.
Upon coming of age, Adrian realized that his daughter could be useful in easing tensions between Linten and House Rose. The King of Linten was putting increasing pressure on both Demeria and Rosewine to come back into the fold. King Sedrick refused to give in to such, but Adrian did not want to suffer King Felipe's ire. Thus, Adrian offered a compromise. His eldest daughter would not only be named heir, but she would marry second son of an influential Count in Felipe's court. In addition, Adrian agreed to trade their wine at a discounted price. That way, Linten would have a presence in Rosewine and partially benefit from the region's rich supply of wines, ales and spirits. The price, however, was that any of Lord Esteban's children would bear the Rose name.
In addition, it was Adrian's hope that being married to the Lintenese man would draw some more passion and fire out of his daughter. Having a level head was all well and good, but it would not hurt Samantha to be more gregarious and passionate for easier relations among her vassals and contemporaries in Court.
Adrian's hopes came true... partially. Esteban and Samantha worked out a companionable relationship and he even managed to make Samantha laugh on more than one occasion. Esteban also impressed upon the importance of appearances and attitude when she assumed the mantel of Duchess of Rosewine. Slowly, Samantha began transforming but much of her aloof but kind personality stayed in place. Bearing four children also helped matters along.
Shortly after the birth of her fourth child, Adrian passed from the world after a period of illness. Samantha was named Duchess of Rosewine two days later. Samantha mourned her father's loss, but also knew she could not stay away from her new responsibilities. The transition went more smoothly than anyone had anticipated. The vassal lords received individual attention and lengthy talks before they swore their fealty to her, resolving many issues and struggles the two of them had been experiencing. Her father had been a good man, but he often ruled with emotion rather than thought.
The first ten years of her rule, Samantha kept largely to Honeyvine, tended to the family business, and did not venture out to Triadon except for official functions and business. However, she knew she could no longer stay away. All of her children were either of age or soon coming of age, and they needed to look to their futures. While her eldest son was learning the principles of leadership, her other children needed their place in life. Roberto desired to be a merchant like her father, Maria wished to join the clergy with the goal of being a mother of her own church, and Mateo had his eyes set on being a knight of the Church. Samantha knew exposure to Court in Triadon would help their dreams.
Thus, did the mysterious, aloof and quiet Duchess of Rosewine emerge from her castle upon the hill to venture to Triadon. What awaited her there...? Only time would tell.

The tallest keep of Honeyvine Castle was Samantha's solitude as of late. It offered the greatest vantage point of the lands and very people every climbed the many steps to admire the few. Normally, a guard would be stationed to keep customary watch over the lands, but Samantha had dismissed him for the night. She wanted to be alone. She needed the solitude to grant her reassurance of her course. She hated leaving Honeyvine. It was a lovely home and it held everything she could ever need.
However, her children were growing older and restless. Esteban was bringing up the topic of Triadon with greater frequency. Despite Samantha's more calm nature, her husband had successfully irritated her that evening. Esteban was a good man, but his stubbornness could be grating on the nerves. What made it worse was that she knew he was right. The children needed to see the world beyond Honeyvine and Rosewine if they were going to grow.
A sigh was exhaled.
"I am sorry," a voice sounded behind her. Surprisingly, it didn't make her jump. She knew Esteban. When he erred, he owned up to it.
"You were speaking your mind and quite passionately so. It is a strength I have come to expect, and ... perhaps admire from you. It has certain passed on to our children," she observed with a faint smile, but she did not turn to gaze at him.
The tall man of Linten approached her side, joining her in gazing out over the duchy and he admired the little pinpoints of light that were homes. "I know it is difficult to think of them leaving home. You would not be a good mother if you did not feel otherwise." A hand slipped around her waist. "We have raised them well."
She felt herself leaning into his embrace, "And it is time for them to fly," she finished the thought with a faint, but warm smile. "I know. I have already told the steward to start preparations for moving us to Triadon. A dove will be sent in the morning to our city home in the city and Triadon Castle to expect our arrival."
Esteban pressed a kiss to her temple, "I am glad to hear it, but I will not be able to join you in Triadon. I must go to Sarkozsy to conclude some business. I am not sure how long I will be gone."
"I expect you to be safe and come back successful," the smile was wry one, but she knew he appreciated having the challenge put before him.
"But of course, dona. Even if we are married, I still strive to impress my lady."
Esteban was rewarded with a full smile and that soft laugh he always garnered. A soft kiss followed, and the two of them continued to admire the night for some time.
