The Next to Fall

The letter had been delivered to the de Vere woman by a servant, as he'd planned, bringing him to the next phase in his plan. Distraction from the King was needed, yet so was discrediting one of the great Houses. Merely thinking of it brought a darkly anticipatory smile to his features. Richard was satisfied with his ability to adapt, to alter when necessary. To remain flexible in the face of adversity and accept that change was inevitable was politically imperative.
He did not rely on his letter working to perfection; Carissa de Vere was not a stupid woman, nor would she arbitrarily take an anonymous letter author's word for granted regarding another Duke, but there were enough false trails laid to lend some credence to the allegations made. The incidents cited allowed for a measure of credulity where coincidence might be concerned, or a lack thereof; too many of that ilk made coincidence unlikely.
However, the next move he intended to make would add fuel to the de Vere duchess's fire. An attack, a physical assault, on the Royal Physician would bring some difficult questions to bear on the Duke and his ability to protect (or in this scenario, not protect) his innocent, dutiful sister. Such a simple plan, yet those proved to be the best, bringing a smirk to bear on saturnine features. The attack would not be made by him, of course not. Too gauche by half, and he intended to be present to allay any suspicions.
The arrangements were made, knowing the girl was remaining close by the King in Triadon while the Festival transpired. He would attend some of the events, Richard was assured, but would not be residing in the lakeside camp. Too detrimental to his health, the Lady Katalin proclaimed. That only made his plot easier to fulfill.
Now, which night, and which event to impose the next to fall...?
