The letter was sealed without signet or crest, a plain black wax on unbleached parchment. The servant who handed it to the duchess's lady's maid was not a familiar face, nor did he linger after thrusting the missive towards the frowning woman but strode off briskly without a look back. Perplexed, the maid looked after him, retreating into the room to deliver the missive to her lady.
If and when the Lady de Vere broke the seal, the contents were as follows:
My Lady of Shaleforth -
I make bold to pen this missive to you out of grave concern for the well-being of your duchy, and for our great Kingdom of Demeria. It has been rumored that the King is being poisoned; I confirm this to you but what you do not know is who is perpetrating this monstrous crime or why. I bring it to your attention as one of the most intelligent and shrewd ladies of the Court; if anyone can uncover this heinous plot, I believe it to be you.
To your south and west lies the Duchy of Oakdale, with its youthful Duke, a man known to hold blood ties to Arton. Do you not find it strange that in an attack that took his father's life, Lord Jasen not only emerged unscathed but uncaptured? And that within mere months of his lord father's death, his lady mother is also brought cruelly low? His young sister appointed to the same place that his mother holds and now the King is poisoned? I cannot speak for you, my lady, but these matters do not seem coincidental to my thinking.
Watch and see for yourself, be the judge, my lady, but maintain your guard in the man's presence. Any man who is callous enough to murder his own parents and use his sister as a potential scapegoat in the death of the King will not scruple to act against you.
If you can bring this truth to light, you may be the saving of the King... and of this Kingdom.
