Personality
The third-born and the younger daughter, Emmaline Carlisle is a young woman struggling to find herself. With a perfect older sister and a rake of an older brother, not to mention a beastly younger brother, she’s not entirely sure where she fits into the family right now. At seventeen, she has finished her formal education, the only Carlisle daughter to attend one of the Order schools, and under her late mother’s auspices, been prepared for the marriage arranged for her when she was two.
A girl fond of music, of the lively whirl of the court and the dance of words, Emma loves to spend her days in a cluster of ladies near to her own age. Her father often teases her that she has established her own little Court where she reigns as the queen of court style, grace and gossip. There is little spoken of in terms of love affairs, scandals, schemes and the like that Emma is not aware of. She enjoys the company of the younger members of the court, surrounding herself with attentive young men and lovely young women, some of whom have unfortunately succumbed to Riordan’s charm despite her warnings. She knows how her brother is. As much as she loves Riordan, she definitely does not approve of him poaching her ladies!
Outwardly, Emma is a confident, lively, and vibrant young woman. Deep down inside however, there is an uncertain, scared little girl who feels the lack of her mother’s guidance. Emma is a little afraid of her Aunt Fiona, and the significant difference in her sister’s situation precludes her from asking Mariana for advice. Aware that the time of her betrothal and marriage is arriving soon, Emma is increasingly reluctant to leave home and take her place as bride to the Prince of Sarkoszy. She hopes if she stays silent… her father will forget about it and she can stay in Demeria.
History
Born in 1521, Emmaline joined Mariana and Riordan as the third of Sedrick and Liadane Carlisle’s progeny. Blessed with her mother’s raven-black hair and dark eyes, the pale little princess was not a fussy babe but insatiably curious. Riordan often said she learned to crawl by chasing after her siblings to learn what they were doing and why, the better to do so herself.
Tristan followed three years later, instantly despised by the little girl. He took away her mother’s attention and he was a nasty boy, an opinion Emma held for years until maturity (and puberty) persuaded her that the male of the species were not entirely reprehensible. Throwing herself into the early studies, Emma displayed a native talent for languages and for the courtly graces the Queen insisted her children learn as soon as possible. When the King learned of his daughter’s interest in the language of Sarkoszy, he seized advantage of the situation, betrothing her to one of the Tsar’s sons in what he anticipated would be a brilliant marriage of alliance.
The girl was not told of this, but sent to one of the Order Schools to gain fluency in the language and to study the culture, history and trade of Sarkoszy. The challenges were welcomed and Emma enjoyed the praise of her tutors, blossoming under their careful training. She completed her formal education at fifteen, returning to Court to receive the final polish her mother insisted on giving her daughters personally. Shortly after her return, unfortunately Liadane fell ill and died, leaving Emma heartbroken. Not even Riordan could soothe her at first, until she found a letter from her mother, one Liadane never sent that encouraged her to continue growing, learning and to be the Princess she was born to be.
Only then did Emma lift her head once more and allow a smile to return. Taking her place in the court, she soon made herself a favorite amongst the younger set, working on Riordan’s behalf to keep him supplied with court gossip and tidbits of information he wasn’t able to obtain himself. She understood that pretty young women were often dismissed as light-minded, and so tongues loosened accordingly.
Now at seventeen, Princess Emmaline has become the jewel of the court and a true daughter of the House of Carlisle.

Standing perfectly still as the dressmaker’s apprentices draped several swatches of fabric over her, Emma narrowed her eyes thoughtfully. The ball to celebrate Midsummer was soon and she needed the perfect gown if she was to impress a certain someone.
Tilting her head a little, she tried to picture the style of gown she preferred, knowing it would help her decide the fabric. The burgundy was lovely, but too dark for summer. Sliding the swatch off, she extended it to the waiting apprentice as a reject, then fell to studying the lavender. The sight of it against her skin made her shudder and hastily cast it aside. “No, I think those two are definitely not what I am looking for.” Suppressing another shudder, Emma held out the rich green and a silver critically.
“Oh, the green, definitely,” piped up Lady Doreah, one of the newest arrivals to court. Emma glanced at the girl, as blonde as a wheat field, and nodded. “I think you are correct, Dorie. The green will be perfect.” With a smile, she handed it off to the relieved dressmaker. “Now, let’s choose a style…”
