Personality
From afar Micah Stratford is not much of an imposing figure, standing an average height with his groomed foppish hair and his fine clothes he might not be deemed a threat to any masculine man at all. It is true that he does not know how to really use a sword very well, but he has some experience from childhood with a bow and can easily use a crossbow - annoying things those are though. Though his real weapon is his mind, and thus he usually is never armed with any weapon - unless of course his brain is considered, and then he is always heavily armed.
He is the Royal Exchequer, a position he has held for well over a decade and has performed to the best of his ability. He is a charming and affable personality, always friendly and pleasant to talk to when people need to seek him out. Such politesse is always a pretense, and it has become a skill he has mastered with great precision over the years. Underneath that neat smile, the man is a through and true schemer. He only is quite strong at masking his true ambitions and pursuits.
Micah’s charming personality aside, he can be very scathing and sharp when he doesn’t like someone. His hatred can become so ruthless he is willing to stoop to any level to deal with the problem stressing his mind until it is taken care of to his satisfaction. It might not be right away, he knows how to play for the long game and wait patiently for the best laid plans to come to fruition. The pleasant man is always very opportunistic, and willing to change course or tune when it fits his agenda. He would probably kill his own mother if it benefitted his goals.
Micah Stratford lives to the play the game, and for that reason he doesn’t see the world in black or white. He sees the world only in shades of grey, and other people as players. Some win, some win sometimes, and many lose.
History
Micah was born the third son of Lord Stratford, the Earl of Stonegard. His father Auric was always an imposing man, and very dominant in lecturing family members on the importance of family and doing all that they can to elevate their status in the world and through marriage. His education and tutoring was intense as a young man, and given his lack of size his combat training was focused to marksmanship with a bow and crossbow rather than any other weapons.
Being the third son he was trained in politics and court protocol so that he could go to the capital and try to gain prestige for the family there or through marriage. For these reasons he is considered the most skilled politician and diplomat of House Stratford, though his older brother Joseph also gives him a run for his money. Joseph decided to take a route through the Church, while Micah’s younger brother Godric is an accomplished knight and warrior. His eldest brother was always groomed for leadership and taking over the house, and so Micah was pretty free to pursue the avenue he wished. Still, his father’s stern and iron-fisted hand guided him for the benefit of their family.
He spent his first many years in the capital and court gaining friends, making deals, and learning how to play the game to his benefit. When the time finally came the King appointed him to the Royal Council as the Exchequer for his notable prowess in accountancy and mathematics. Ever since that appointment he has been managing the crown’s taxes, revenues, and trying to keep things in order despite all the offices under the King claiming they need more money. Additionally, Micah has become one of the richest men in the capital, independently wealthy from his own family. It is not sure how, because he has not done anything wrong or been caught doing anything wrong. He is just that much better than numbers and records than anyone else is. Some have called him an Arithmancer.
During his early years in the capital he did find love and eventually married, having some children with his wife. He made sure to provide his children with a quality education and give them the same opportunities he was, and hopefully he will be able to marry them off strategically. He wasn’t as eager to marry them off when they were ready, sometimes waiting until the time was right. Though all seems well, there are secrets that Micah keeps behind his well-placed smile. These are secrets about his massive wealth, his own family, and his ambitions.

Jack Rogers, it was a terrible name for anyone, at least in Micah’s opinion as he sat in his leather-padded armchair with his feet relaxed on a leg-stand. The man groveled before the Exchequer insisting the information was correct. Rogers was a tax collector and informant to the Lord Exchequer. Over the years he had rooted out neutrality and sought to replace all tax collectors and other clerks and officials in the treasury office and line of work with people loyal to him. Unfortunately, Rogers had been growing sloppy in his work, likely becoming lazy with the fruits of his labour.
Micah had received some quality information on certain families in particular regions that this tax collector was assigned to deal with. In exchange, Micah provided him performance rewards, which were bonus amounts of gold that those in his employ could earn for high quality work. Thus many of his tax collectors became men with small fortunes and enjoyed these fruits of their labour. These fruits were rewards, all awarded from Micah himself for loyalty and dedication. The most important aspect they forgot, however, was utmost discretion. He already had to have one of his record keepers murdered after he started raising questions.
In some ways, Rogers was good for allowing that record keeper to start asking questions as it allowed the Exchequer to root out another threat from his own office. Nonetheless, it showed that Rogers was truly getting sloppy in his work. It was a shame, as Jack used be to be called, ‘The Rabbit’ for his swift work in the past. Jack the Rabbit, and to think now he was Jack shit. Micah smiled and put his feet to the ground. He got himself up. “Do not fear, Sir Rogers,” he said politely. Micah had all of his tax collectors trained in the sword, and knighted in their duties so they had some sort of title for people to address them as well as be able to protect themselves. “We have rooted out enemies because of your actions, and in a way you have been very helpful for me.”
Micah went to his desk and pulled out a leather pouch full of gold coins, and gestured for it. “Your reward for your work, my friend,” he offered. It was the man’s due performance bonus, since tax collectors always were always paid when returning the gold to the treasury authorities. Micah pulled out a bottle of wine, and bent down to withdraw two separate goblets. Rogers had not been paying attention, and so did not see Micah drop something into one of the goblets. He poured the wine and offered one goblet to Sir Rogers, and took his own to sip. “A toast to your success,” he raised the glass, and sipped once more. The man didn’t see it coming, and before he knew it he started coughing up blood and choking. Micah watched without remorse as the man dropped the wine, spilling it, and collapsed to the ground.
Sir Anzo, one of Micah’s personal henchmen arrived in the room and knew the routine. The body would be taken care of, through a secret passage connected to the office. Micah sat down and continued enjoying his wine. “It was nothing personal, just business.” He could not afford sloppy operatives. Liabilities had to be taken care of, one way or another.
