Personality
Deep down, Sergei is a people pleaser. He hungers for acknowledgment and affection and after he receives it, he continues to work to receive more. From a young age, Sergei's parents placed a rest deal of pressure on him. He was fortunate enough to meet their expectations to become an effective worker with a good head on his shoulders. Sergei's sister not knowing what to say to him inspired him to make a good deal of effort to understand women so he could try to meet her halfway.
One of the most important people in his life is Prince Nikolai, of course. He met the other when he was ten-years-old and the two of them have been friends ever since. Nikolai relies on Sergei emotionally and Sergei does whatever he can to make life easier for him. Nearly everything they partake in is a competition: sword fighting, artistry -- all in good fun, of course. Sergei encouraged Nikolai to be more outgoing to strangers and other nobles by setting an example. In return, Nikolai taught him about dedication and the importance of responsibility. Sergei felt as though he could tell Nikolai anything and he loved to make him laugh.
Sergei has a curious mind and his desire to help people drove him to the pursuit of learning about herbal remedies and how creatures worked. He also dabbled in sketching every now and then, although his affection for the princess inspired most of the best ones. He wanted to be with her and yet he was just a lowly ranking noble. Watching her from afar was the only thing he could do and he would do anything for her.
History
Sergei was the second child of Julij and Roza Kazakov and their only son. Julij owned land and yet their family was not of high ranking. They worked hard and Sergei's father was decent to everyone around him. The Kazakovs kept their promises and were diligent, efficient workers. Sergei had a happy childhood, but he never was very close with his sister Sofya, who was married by the time Sergei was six. (They parents had had trouble conceiving after her and both wished for a son.)
An eight-year-old Nikolai happened to be out in the city square, admiring his surroundings. He became lost, accidentally wandering off from the guards. He realized this and started to panic, despite trying to repress his feeling. He was the Crown Prince and not supposed to be afraid of being on his own! Luck struck within moments, as he caught sight of a young teenager juggling fruit in front of a few others. This was Sergei, quite the showoff at ten years of age.
After he finished his performance, he saw the boy clapping in front of him and did not recognize him at first. He introduced himself and discovered that Nikolai was lost, whereupon he took matters into his own hands. He asked people around if they had seen the guards and Nikolai's father, returning son to father in five minutes. Sergei's efficiency impressed the King, who requested that Sergei help to look after Nikolai and be his friend (because let's face it, the boy needed friends.)
Although unsure about whether or not he could handle the huge responsibility, Sergei talked to his parents; his father was most adamant about bringing honor to the Kazakov family and moving them up in Sarkozsy society. So Sergei left for the palace, unaware that his life was about to change for the better.
He did his best to do everything the royal family expected of him and Nikolai became the younger brother Sergei never had. When Nikolai was too shy, Sergei became his representative, breaking the ice so it was easier for Nik to talk to people. Following Sergei's example, Nikolai grew more relaxed talking to strangers and important nobles.
In the winter of Sergei's sixteenth year, he caught a serious virus and told no one about it. He worked, very sick, until he could last no longer, fainting in the hallway. Nikolai, at 14, feared the thought of losing his best friend, and stayed by Sergei's side for three days until he recovered. From then on, Nikolai kept a quiet eye on Sergei and his wellbeing.
Sergei had his dalliances with a few women at the end of his teenage years, but it was growing increasingly difficult to ignore what a fine woman Princess Anastasia was becoming. They spent more time together as of recent and Sergei fell utterly in love.
RP Sample
Sergei finished his conversation with various people about the princesses' outing. One of his top priorities was to keep them safe and thus he had to research how safe the area was before Princess Anya and Katya set foot in it. He would secure the area and have his sword at the ready while accompanying them there. They should be able to have a safe and relaxing time -- he'd be worrying about everything at once, but that was no more different than usual. Granted, maybe he was more concerned with how everything should be safe for Anastasia than Nikolai, but he wanted to be the man whom she relied on without hesitation.
He still worried about the Crown Prince as well, as a friend and as a liege. The man refused to talk to him despite Sergei's attemps and he wished he had a device to speed time forward until Nikolai wanted him around again. What had Sergei done to face this sort of rejection? He had pushed no harder than usual, so maybe it was just the unusual situation.
He pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind as he concentrated on his duties ahead. While the princesses would ride in the carriage, he would sit in the back to keep watch. He had three of his most trusted and skilled friends who were more than a match for an ambush. That knowledge helped him relax and with luck, the three women would have a productive shopping trip and bonding experience. As usual, an assistant must be invisible but always present, with the ability to predict the needs of the ladies.
Thus began his time as a ghost.
A thought (a lyric?) slithered its way into his head. A blanket of mist wraps warmly around. The song continued in his mind as he watched Princess Anastasia disappear into the carriage.
