Immediate Family Members - James and Rosemary St. Claire (parents); Veronica and Timothy (siblings); Helena Marbury (wife, deceased); Julia, Lynesse, Rosalie, Cecelia (children)
Personality
Daven St. Claire has never been accused of being a congenial man. One never seeks him out for a polite or pleasant conversation, since it is well known that he rather detests the act of small talk. Instead, he is renowned for being bluntly honest to a fault and a man that gets straight to the point. While words can carry weight, Daven believes that actions are far more indicative of a person’s personality and intentions. The Dragon of St. Claire is observant and calculating with just the right mixture of tall and strong to be physically imposing. The deep rumble of his voice only adds to the effect.
However, Daven’s preciously precocious daughters would argue otherwise. On the surface, the man is very rough around the edges but a heart does lurk somewhere within the heavily muscled chest. Naturally, he denies the existence of such and will violently prove otherwise if needed. Ever since his wife died due to illness, the stress of running a house, fending off his siblings and looking after his four daughters has put lines on his face and gray in his hair.
Daven is very protective of his brood and will always act in what he feels are their best interests. His relationships with his siblings are another story. Much to his chagrin, they waste no opportunity to point out that he has failed to produce a male heir and argue that one of their sons should be selected. Daven’s pride and lack of trust in his siblings’ motives have prevented such an arrangement. Thus, he seeks whatever comfort he can find in the relationships with his daughters. Though they are just as stubborn and trying as he, he nonetheless loves them a great deal.
Finally, Daven views himself as the Defender of the Realm even though he is not its Marshal, the title of which belongs to one of his nephews. The Dragon of St. Claire delights, as much as such a thing is possible, in military strategy, tactics and command. His own efforts as well as those of his ancestors have made the St. Claire duchy the most militarily capable in the kingdom. It has never crossed Daven’s mind to utilize this strength for political gain. Rather, he uses it to fiercely defend the home he loves.
History
Born to James St. Claire and Rosemary Halton, Daven had the general look of his father but the eyes of his mother, he was the first born of three children. Though his grandparents and father were people of strong, but gentle disposition, Daven never really seemed to take to such a personality. As a child, Daven was very quiet and intensely private. It often took considerable effort on his mother’s part to draw him out of his shell or even make him speak. Daven later revealed, rather bluntly, that he was perfectly capable of speech, but he didn’t feel the need to waste them in trivial conversation. From then on, Daven’s reputation for being extremely blunt was established. The fluffy words, as he so eloquently described them, belonged more to his younger sister and brother.
Daven’s love of action became quickly apparent during his childhood. He took to combat training and horse riding like a fish to water, becoming quite adept with many weapons and types of horses before he came of age. Military history and strategy were particularly loved, partially because of his family’s military background. Daven enjoyed surveying a battlefield and imagining possible outcomes to various tactics and strategies. As he grew older, Daven became increasingly observant and calculating, a trait that made him an effective military leader but it never quite extended to the battlefield that was the Court.
Daven’s first Court Season was an unmitigated disaster. Despite his mother’s best efforts, Daven managed to insult several lords, alienated many people of his own age group and even got into a fair number of duels, both sanctioned and not, because of it. Subsequent years and training did not seem to make a difference, such Daven stubbornly clung to his ideals. Fluffy and diplomatic words were entirely pointless; only action mattered. James St. Claire was on the verge of losing hope and was considering naming Timothy heir instead.
Then Daven met Helena. The two of them met after he had a heated argument with another young lord. Helena approached him shortly after, possibly out of a little bit of pity for Daven, and confronted him on his behavior. When Daven roared, Helena bore the brunt of it and even stood against him. It was not long after that Daven had learned to calm himself, and the two fell in love. Since James was fairly certain not many women could stand to marry Daven, he agreed to the match as well as keeping Daven as heir to House St. Claire.
The years went on, James passed from the world. Daven became Lord of house St. Claire and had four beautiful daughters with his wife. However, what started as a perfectly content life was tragically cut short when she died due to illness. Daven, understandably, felt adrift. It was only the love of his daughters that pulled him through and even then, one could notice that Daven was not the same man anymore. With Julia’s help, Daven is now looking forward and faces an important choice: should he find another wife in hopes of producing a son, give in to his siblings’ demands or name his eldest daughter heir to the Duchy?

Daven hated Court. He would never deny its importance, but he hated it. Helena had helped him make it more tolerable, but she was no longer here to do so. Helena could easily maneuver through the various halls and people. How she did it, Daven never really learned. He didn’t have to. He worked to keep the family safe and established the goals, and she used her charms, wit and cunning to make it all happen. It wasn’t that Daven was necessarily dependent on Helena, just that they happened to make a very good team. Fortunately, he had a similar partnership with his daughter Julia. It wasn’t the same, though. How could it be?
Standing tall with his hands tucked at the small of his back, Daven used all the patience he possessed to listen to Lord Jardinier practically pontificate on how certain matters in the Kingdom should be run. Daven probably agreed with him to an extent, but what did Jardinier want him to do about it? Ah, there it is. He wanted one of his own to be named the Master of Trade. Since Daven regularly served to advise the King on military matters along with his never, the Jardinier Duke was hoping Daven could use his influence on his side. They were old friends, if only for the fact that Jardinier used to be vassals of St. Claire.
“Mm,” was all Daven managed to grunt, “It requires some thought on my part.” More than that, he would not commit, casting a sidelong glance to his daughter.
