Personality
As the second son of the de Lac brood, Laurent has has always been a determined sort of boy. His brother had a natural head start in life and Laurent hated to be left behind, no matter the circumstances. Thus, even from an early age, Laurent has always been filled with determination and a dauntless attitude. No mountain couldn’t be climbed, no sea unable to be traversed and no foe could be left undefeated. Laurent refuses to believe in the existence of the no-win scenario. A solution to any problem could be found, only if one knew exactly where to look or where to look.
To the chagrin of his mother, however, this admirable quality of Laurent’s did not necessarily translate into political ambition. Veronica St. Claire was determined to find a place for each of his brothers. Ari would be the Lord of the Lakes, Thomas would become the Commander of the Kingsguard, and for Laurent? Laurent’s goal was Veronica’s grandest: to become Duke of Twinport. Daven St. Claire’s mate had failed in her duty to provide a son for the family. As such, Veronica has been grooming Laurent to assume the mantle.
Or, at least, she tried.
On paper, Laurent has no qualms with assuming the Duchy of Twinport but he did not feel right in being a usurper. Until Daven St. Claire said otherwise, Julia St. Claire is to be Duchess of Twinport. Laurent refuses to take part of any plots of his mother’s, and she has accepted this quality of her son with great reluctance. Fortunately for her, she did not consider her son a complete loss even if she did find some of his qualities to be incredibly annoying.
Indeed, Laurent is probably the sunniest member of the family despite the hardships they had all faced. The sun to his dear twin’s moon, it is rare that one does not see a smile on Laurent’s face and one is guaranteed to laugh at least once while in his presence. Laurent has always been imbued with a sense of great optimism and believing in the best of people. This makes him naturally charismatic, and for the most part, people enjoy being around him for even on a rainy day, Laurent finds something good about it.
This quality of Laurent’s has its ups and downsides, however. It has made him a good negotiator, a natural host and he can always manage to make people feel at ease. Because of such, he is mostly good at reading people and can adapt to himself to many a social situation. Unfortunately, because he such a positive outlook on life, it often leaves him blindly optimistic. Since he strongly believes that any challenge can be surmounted, he can often overestimate his own capabilities in certain situations. Indeed, he is most fortunate to have his moon of a twin sister to help pull him back down when needed.
As such, he maintains a close relationship with his siblings. All of them find their mother to be more or less unbearable, especially as she gets older. There is nothing he wouldn’t do for his brothers and sister. Whether it is advising Ari as to the best course of action, helping Thomas make the right sort of connections to become the perfect knight or making his sister show her frankly beautiful smile and helping her run the house, Laurent is there. Naturally, though, this raises the question of what is he going to do with himself. Is he truly the future Duke of Twinport or did the future have something else in store for him?
History
Born 30 minutes before his twin, Laurent has always been an emotionally bright child and his enthusiasm barely contained. Whether it was a family member, a friend or a complete stranger, they were greeted with a naturally sunny smile that was almost always disarming. It was, indeed, in contrast to his more serious and solemn twin sister. Regardless of the sun and moon difference, it was rare to see the two of them apart. Whether they were learning together, spending time with the family or he was cheering her up, they were nigh inseparable.
While they were growing up, Laurent was often Lisette's champion along with his brothers. Lisette may not have been blessed with physical beauty, but she had many qualities that Laurent loved and admired about her. Anyone who viewed her as less than such were given a piece of his mind. When Laurent was not defending his sister's honor, he was taking to his lessons as provided by his tutors and mother. The lessons from his mother, however, proved to be uncomfortable and difficult for Laurent to master. The two of them were soon at odds. Veronica believed that Laurent should behave more like an austere and solemn lord, but Laurent would not have any of it. The world was too big, too beautiful and too amazing and he refused to view it as anything less.
It was the influence of his father that had Veronica ease her firm hand. Bryant guided Laurent away from his mother and more onto his tutors, who were more than happy to provide the young man some respite. Like his twin sister, Laurent received a thorough grounding in all critical subjects. However, during the course of his education, it became apparent Laurent struggled greatly with mathematics. It was only the hard work of his tutor and the patience of his twin sister that helped him mostly overcome the challenges. To this day, Laurent is still quite uncomfortable with the subject and avoids it whenever he can.
Laurent developed other qualities to compensate for the lack of mathematical ability, including conflict resolution, swordplay, calligraphy and he discovered a passion for painting. The art he produced was quite varied ranging from landscapes to portraits to scenes that could only appear in dreams. Veronica thought the skill to be of questionable value but his father and siblings encouraged him to pursue his passion. Indeed, his ability with art gave him greater confidence about his many talents.
He was content with life until the age of 15. Veronica had been working on marriages for all of her children, but was having abysmal luck in getting them pushed through. Rupert de Vere II initially rejected his dear twin sister and Laurent's own betrothal with a lady of House Ormonde was cut short due to a tragic accident. Veronica had to completely rethink her plans for Laurent as she wanted what she deemed the perfect wife for him, especially if he was going to be the next Duke of Twinport. To make matters worse, his twin sister was kidnapped by nefarious pirates. She was recovered with no harm done, but Laurent had bore witness to acts of punishment on the pirates that he would never forget.
Lisette's kidnapping was exacerbated by the de Vere boy's complete refusal to marry her. Laurent was further stunned when Lisette stood up for herself violently, but secretly he was proud of her act. It had no doubt put de Vere in his place. However, not even his skills with conflict resolution could stop his father's understandable anger, and the betrothal was broken on the spot. House de Vere was named enemy to the house, and Laurent frankly agreed. The de Veres were snakes of the worst kind in his firm opinion.
The tragic loss of his father due to the cursed pirates spurned the siblings into necessary action. Aristide assumed the mantle of responsibility, quickly putting their mother in place. Thomas, meanwhile, went off to Triadon to continue his training to knighthood and Laurent stayed behind with his precious sister to assist Aristide in every way possible. They could not stay near the lakes forever, though and Laurent began to push his siblings toward Triadon. The House needed to move forward without the meddling of their mother. Their futures needed to be secured.
Just what those futures were, however, remained to be seen...

Laurent didn't think it was going to be all that hard to convince his siblings that they needed to attend Court in Triadon. Thomas had already gone ahead and had reported some success in his interactions with the other nobles. Laurent also believed that a change of scenery would be good for his siblings, especially Lisette. They needed to make a stronger presence for themselves in Court. Not only would it help further their goals, but the opportunity to impress their Duchess was ripe for the taking. However, Laurent knew they needed goals.
His mother, he thought sardonically, would no doubt impress upon them her ideas. Veronica continued to push for Laurent becoming the next Duke of Twinport, an idea that he was not against, but he was not going to employ the underhanded methods his mother was so keen on suggesting. Julia St. Claire was a fine enough woman and Laurent would not do her any dishonor. That being said, Laurent would no doubt request a meeting with her to get her feelings on the matter of the Duchy of Twinport. Perhaps there was an opportunity there for Laurent to make his mark.
Aristide needed a wife. The future of the de Lac house needed to be secured, though he had no earthly idea just whom he should marry. No doubt Court would have a plethora of fine ladies from which to select, but would Aristide be willing to even consider the shackles of marriage? Laurent had a feeling his brother was going to need his skills more than ever once they were in Triadon.
As for his dear precious sister, it would be good for her to venture out of the Lakes to new surroundings. Lisette's pride had been severely battered over the years, and Laurent wished to help her rebuild it. Laurent himself thought Lisette to be a beautiful woman, both in looks and mind. Personally, he hated the idea of seeing her go but accepted it as their lot in life. Then again, if he did happen to become Duke of Twinport, perhaps he could steal her to be his chatelaine... So many possibilities.
Strolling into the solar that held his siblings, he smiled brightly at them. "Good morning, good morning! I'm glad you've joined me here. Say, I've an idea that's been flying about my mind for the better part of a few days, and I want to share it with you." And then, with excitement, he launched into his suggestion.
