Personality
The older of the two Fyodorov daughters, Anastasia greatly resembles her mother the Queen in both physical and social aspects. Groomed to be her mother's right hand in a number of respects, she prefers to be busy. Whether it's acting as a hostess, welcoming guests and dignitaries to the palace, or reviewing the tenant rents, crops and homes on the Queen's estates, or sitting at her loom, weaving thread into cloth. To Anya, the cloth is symbolic of her efforts to keep Sarkozsy whole and strong. She combines efficiency with warmth, charm with courtesy and humor with determination.
Unlike her brother, Anya has a well developed sense of humor. Life is too short to spend it without smiling or laughing several times a day. That does not mean she can't be serious - in fact, Anya can go from amused to stone cold sober at a moment's notice - but she prefers to address issues with humor rather than anger. And she worries for her brother that he has not yet learned to embrace life in ways that bring joy and mirth. In that respect, Anya is distant from Nikolai - his near-obsession with being the perfect Crown Prince, the ideal representative of Sarkozsy and his tendency towards self-deprecation have put a barrier between them that she desperately wishes to tear down before he harms himself... and Sarkozsy.
Anya is also a very independent woman, one who sees little reason or impetus for marriage for herself. That doesn't mean she's disinterested in romance, or men, but rather, she considers herself too busy at the moment. At seventeen, Anya is far from an old maid, but she extracted a promise from her parents when she was fourteen - she would marry if and when she deemed a gentleman adequate. So far, there's been no one who's met her exacting standards, though she has plenty of friends of both male and female persuasion.
It is a simple life she prefers. On more than one occasion, Anya wished she had not been born of so high a rank, because it kept her apart from their people too much. Though she has come to accept her birth, she is strongly considering abdicating from the line of succession and asking that she be granted a more humble title. Frankly, she doesn't WANT to be a princess.
There is one other matter that greatly brothers Anya, and that is the forthcoming marriage of Nikolai to the Demerian princess. A foreign Queen ruling over Sarkozsy is something she finds difficult to accept, much less support, and would much rather that the marriage - if it must come to that to ensure alliance - be made where Demetri marries the girl, or better yet, if Katya is married to the younger prince.
History
Born at the change of the year in 1521, Anastasia was the first of two daughters born to the Tsar and Tsarina. Graced with her mother's raven hair and her father's blue eyes, Anya (as she was nicknamed) was in a fair way to be one petted, spoiled, indulged little princess except for one not-so-small matter.
She didn't WANT to be a princess.
Anya wanted the freedom she saw in the merchants and the freedmen of Sarkozsy, the chance to do and be anyone, anything she could achieve for herself rather than accepting the roles and responsibilities given to her by birth. She didn't want the privileges and blessings of royalty any more than the burdens. Anya did not want to learn courtly graces when she could be out riding, exploring the countryside and learning real things. She didn't want to bother with learning heraldry and who would be a good marriage prospect for the Princess or how to manage a palace full of servants or who sat by whom at a feast when there were people who didn't have as much to eat or were treated cruelly by their boyars.
It took a sit-down talk with her parents and uncle to make Anya understand the good that she could do because she was a princess - she had access to people who could bring about the betterment of the lives of the common people. She had funds that could be put to use in ways that served to benefit the people. She had opportunities others did not... if she was willing to accept who she was born to be. Deciding to accept it, Anya begged to learn what she called real skills - managing estates, overseeing the farms of the peasants, and helping her mother with the people's needs. They entered into a compromise - Anya would accept the lessons required of a Fyodorov daughter, and in turn, she would be able to manage the Queen's estates.
She accepted and threw herself into both lessons, determined to succeed. Wanting to be as much a good example to her younger sister Katya, the sibling to whom she was closest, Anya enjoyed taking lessons with Katya. It wasn't much fun alone, but with her little sister it was far more enjoyable.
At age fourteen, she learned of the betrothal of Nikolai to the Demerian princess and found herself frightened by the thought of being shackled for life to a stranger. Deciding to take matters into her own hands, Anya confronted her parents and spoke with them about the matter. She wasn't sure how she persuaded them, but they agreed to her request - to marry when she chose and to a man whom she could respect, one who would view her not as a Princess but an equal partner.
Now at eighteen, she has developed a stubborn, independent streak, but with age has come some wisdom - Anya has developed the arts of diplomacy for the good of Sarkozsy, especially concerned for the forthcoming alliance marriage with Demeria. Knowing her brother as she does, she opted to travel with Katya to Demeria, the better to smooth things along despite her lack of support for the notion of accepting a foreign bride as Queen. Still, she has her duty to her land and her family to fulfill...

The ship conveying her to Demeria sliced through the waves as they sailed northwest. Anya stood at the rail, gazing towards the horizon where she could barely make out the dark smudge that was land; the captain assured her by nightfall, they would reach the shore of their future ally. From there, he informed her, she and her entourage (three people, such an impressive entourage!) would board a barge and sail for Twinport. It was a land where transportation was dominated by river travel, rather than the roads. Anya didn't mind - it spared her rear end the discomfort of ruts in the road.
Uncertain of what she would find, she thought back over her mother's words prior to dispatching her on the ship. Nikolai needs your help, Anya. He does his best, but I am concerned for how he interacts with Princess Emmaline. His letters make few references to her, only that he has made progress. You know your brother. I need you and Katya to go to Demeria, ensure this proceeds smoothly. We need this... I know I may rely upon you." Anya let her gaze fall to the water as it frothed past, sparkling and gleaming like the diamonds for which Sarkozsy was famous. She had no doubts that her brother handled the political aspects excellently, adroitly... but the personal aspects, i.e. his future bride? Nikolai was probably in trouble.
A quiet smile curved her lips, thinking of her brother. Nikolai was the best of men, with an excellent mind but a too-hidden heart. He was so worried about making a poor impression that he came off as cold and aloof to some. That was where she and Katya were needed; they could hopefully inject some warmth into Nik, allow him to relax enough that his future bride could get a good idea of whom she was marrying and cooperate. If nothing else, she would persuade the girl herself that after the wedding, Nik's true self - the brother whom she loved and respected - would emerge.
For now, Anya let her mind drift away like a bird on the wind... maybe she should have taken up sailing as a child...
