Personality
Frederick von Arles is, in many ways, the quintessential Treniatan. A commoner from Frederick’s lands would tout him as a good, honorable, hardworking man that sets a fine example for those over whom he will rule in the future. Indeed, many would say that he is his father’s son, having his looks, personality, natural leadership ability and quiet, but powerful nature. However, people from other kingdoms may find themselves put off by his mannerisms. More often than not, Frederick does not dress a lord supposedly should. Fine clothes only get in the way, in Frederick’s opinion and what is the point of wearing such things if he is going to be working hard on helping a home being built, a field being tilled or traipsing through the woods after a deer? Thus, if a single word had to be used to describe Frederick von Arles, it would be practical.
Fortunately, he is not practical to the point of being a dullard. Frederick has his passions just as any man. The man has a keen love for hunting, but not for sport. The fascination with hunting came from his childhood days of venturing deep within the forest to explore. Overtime, these sojourns evolved in self-taught lessons of nature. Frederick learned the ways of the forest, what animals did what, what plants were useful and which were dangerous, and so on. As such, a deep respect for the power of nature in all of its forms developed within him. When his father took him on his first hunt, Frederick participated but he refused to do so for sport. Rather, he did so because he was the predator and the animals he hunted were the prey. Predators consume prey. Predators do not display prey as trophies in a hall. Overtime, Frederick became a particularly good hunter, able to track a herd of deer for many miles without being detected and taking only what he deems necessary. More often than not, any kills of his are given to commoner families who have no means of supporting themselves.
Frederick’s humble and respectful nature has won him a great many friends amongst the commoners and the nobles in the Court. Certainly, foreigners would contend that Frederick is too idealistic for his own good, but his own people are quick to point out just how practical he is, too. If a disaster arises in his home, he does what he can to aid his people. If his people become threatened, he defends them. If his people are unhappy, he determines the most practical means of ensuring future happiness. A happy, safe, content, and productive people are the best sort of people in Frederick’s opinion. Such a people will do anything to ensure not only the safety of their lands, but the safety of their liege.
On the surface, Frederick seems the perfect man. However, like any person, he is mired by his shortcomings. Frederick, like many Treniatans, has a love for drink, particularly ale. It is said that Frederick can get rather gregarious if he has one too many ales, but he does his best to control his intake. Frederick has also been accused of being too stubborn and hardheaded for his own good. Once he is set on a path, it is all but impossible for him to be veered away from said path. While he does his best to keep an open mind and listen to all opinions, he makes it quite clear, bluntly even, when his mind is made up. While it takes a great deal to occur, his anger is most unpleasant once it has been roused.
Fortunately, those qualities are offset by a quiet, surprisingly gentle and observant nature. Something that people find surprising about him is when he laughs; it is startlingly booming and sudden. However, if one can make him laugh, he is instantly put at ease and comes across as a man that one would meet off the street of the city rather than the Courts of powerful Kings.
History
The firstborn of Walter and Sophie von Arles, Frederick’s birth was warmly received and celebrated by the people of the duchy. An heir had been produced, Walter’s line was secure, and there was little concern as to just what kind of man Frederick would grow up to become. The von Arles have always been a reasonable and level headed family, granting both the duchies and the kingdom peace and prosperity. Their reputation for practicality and efficiency are world renowned, even if they tend not to be the most exciting individuals in the world. Frederick proved to be no exception to that rule.
As a child, he was rather gregarious, outgoing and very keen on running around outside as often as his parents would permit him to do so. Staying cooped up inside all day was extremely dull to Frederick, and thus his parents had some difficulty getting him to stay in place for his lessons. While it was healthy for a boy to play and explore, Frederick’s parents were determined to make certain he received the optimum education for a boy of his station and rank. Reading and math were a struggle for him for much of his childhood and teenage years. While he eventually grasped reading, he did not much care for it and he still suffers with math.
Fortunately, his love of the outdoors proved to be a significant boon. Frederick never balked at helping the people of the duchy with the various tasks, such as harvesting, building, watching after animals and the like. Indeed, he like many before him, he worked side-by-side with his future vassals as often as time would permit and developed a reputation of being a hardworking man. If there was something that needed to be done, Frederick did not hesitate and immediately set to work.
As he came of age, his parents decided that it was time for him to consider looking for a wife, but did not push him hard on selecting one. Frederick’s father, after all, was a hearty fellow and still had several years ahead of him! Frederick, however, was not interested in being tied down quite so early. There was far too much in the world to be seen before he had to devote his entire life to the archduchy. Thus, he beseeched his parents to let him travel outside of Treniata. Certainly, there were a wealth of countries to see: Ixo, Sarkoszy, Demeria, Arton and many others. It took cajoling and convincing, but eventually his father agreed to let him travel, but only if Frederick agreed to act as an envoy to the lands, representing their trade interests and not like a wide-eyed tourist.
Over the next several years, Frederick alternated between going to a foreign country and then coming home for appropriate periods of time. While Frederick loved to travel, he did also very much love his home. The first destination had been Sarkoszy, in which he learned a great deal of their culture and improved relations between the two countries. Fortunately, they were of a like mind and this process was not so challenging. Arton, however, proved to be a different matter and Frederick felt as though he were being eyed as though he were a fat cow for the slaughter. The predator/prey relationship operated too strongly within the Artonese Empire for his tastes.
Demeria was next on his list, and then Ixo would be his final stop in a small country tour. Frederick had high hopes for Demeria, having heard many wonderful things about the nation. Court had already started by the time he had arrived, but surely, the royal family would nonetheless welcome him warmly. … Or so he hoped.

Triadon could be seen in the distance. It hadn't been a terribly long journey for Frederick, not nearly as long as the journey to the lovely nation across the sea. The journey had also been a good deal warmer, and thus more comfortable! So far, Demeria reminded him a great deal of home in terms of geography and general feel. However, he knew Demeria had many more rivers running through it, as he had seen several of the beautiful streams on the way north. The sight of the capitol itself, though, was something he was not prepared for.
The city looked like any typical city, but the actual palace itself was incredible. Never had he seen such a construction, for it looked as though it should fall into the lake over the waterfall at any moment. Members of entourage noticed his amazement, seeming amused that he was so captivated by it. One of the ladies, an older woman that had looked after him since he was but a boy, reached up over, gently touched his chin and pushed his jaw up. "Not lord-like to gawp, Frederick," she tutted at him, and then chuckled before moving on.
It may not have been very lord-like, but he couldn't help himself. "Well, let us hope there is not too much to gawp at, or I may end up slipping on my own drool. Then I would never hear the end of it," the comment was given in a dry, but amused tone. "Let's move on, then. It's rude to keep hosts waiting, and you know how I feel about being late." The horses were given gentle kicks on the flanks and the distance to Triadon was rapidly reduced.
Frederick look forward to this next chapter in his life.
