Personality:
Utterly unafraid to speak his mind, Tristan often gets into trouble for letting his opinion be known, as the youngest children are supposed to be respectful of others and mind their manners. He values freedom of speech and will support whichever man sounds as he makes sense without mincing words, for there is nothing more he dislikes than two-faced statements. Trying not to lie if it can be done, the teenager tends to show his explosive temper if he realizes the speaker is trying to pull the wool over his eyes, which leads to arguments with his father, as Tristan knows full well that he’s being used for a pawn in the King’s games and doesn’t like it much. As there’s little he can do about it, however, the young Prince does his best to turn things to his advantage, though sometimes those maneuvers are on the clumsy side, considering his age and relative inexperience in matters of the court.
Among the family members, and if he’s safe in knowing that he’s the unknown face, Tristan can be a bit of a prat. His remarks are sometimes cutting without his meaning to, and at other times, with him fully aware of weight behind whatever he’s saying. A good swordsman, he’s not against getting into a duel, whether instigated or not, and would often support his words with weapons if he feels like the situation needs it. The only ones he allows to influence him are his siblings and, to a point, his father, though he dislikes intensely that he is under an obligation to do so, particularly the necessity of following his father’s orders. He is set on avoiding his older brother Riordan, determined not to gain his reputation for ways with women, and has no clue what to make of his eldest sister Mariana, the woman being practically a stranger to him since his early days. While he understood that his siblings had responsibilities they must follow, Tristan quite openly showed his dislike for such, though he tends to join in whatever Emma had planned – if it fit his tastes.
History:
The youngest child of the Carlisles, Tristan was the one most sheltered, which gave the boy plenty of room to seek out trouble while he could do so without much notice. As a child, that trouble-seeking opportunity allowed him to learn his way around the castle and pick up on information that children were not supposed to know. He had grown close to his siblings, at least the ones that were around, and ended up spending plenty of time with his sister Emmaline when not planning anything. His older brother and eldest sister remained a mystery, as they were early on ensnared by the Court and their respective duties, one marrying into the Jardinier House and the other being his charming self to the surrounding Lords and Ladies, something that Tristan found distasteful. Wondering if preferring to tell the truth wasn’t one of his weaknesses, the boy did his best to learn how to tell only half of it, though it went against his grain, and instead attended to the lessons assigned, deciding that he needed to keep up to the rest of his siblings if he wished to avoid being dead or worse.
As he was growing up, so was the distance between him and his elder siblings growing right along with him, though the gulf between him and Emmaline was closing just as rapidly. That development was a solace to the young Prince, for he had no wish to be as isolated from the members of his own family as his station inadvertently was making him to be, and the needed time for lessons and attention to detail was often robbing him of his chances, letting Tristan to become a rebellious teenager with sense of fair play but inability to express it aside from actions that could be seen as offending to some. This time, he managed to get to know some of those who were oftentimes seen around the palace and in his sister’s company, though he never particularly grew close to anyone. Thanks to his station, Tristan soon enough learned that the masks were a-plenty and he had to be careful to discern between real personalities and faces the visitors showed to the Royals, a skill he is still learning.
His mother’s death affected the young Prince greatly, leading him to become closer to Emma, but withdrawing from most everyone else. Coping with the event on his own was never a good idea, but Tristan felt that the closeness he and his mother shared couldn’t be regained by anyone else, despite his sister being a very close second. While not at all comfortable with the role he was being thrust into, the teenager rebelled as best as he could, finding himself learning the ways to do so quietly and without being called out on it, and learned several places in the castle and surroundings where he could work out his temper, for he found himself reluctant to display it in public. Well aware that as a Prince and the youngest of the family he could share his sibling’s fate at betrothal, Tristan is making an effort at facing the Court, though he’s not as well-noticed as his eldest siblings and just passed the stage of isolation.
RP Sample:
Tristan was looking for an out in the increasingly stifling castle. The Royal visit from the other country was making him both nervous and furious, considering that it was in place to likely discuss his sister Emmaline’s marriage, so he made attempts to escape the necessary audiences and hide, both in the library and the gardens. Sometimes, he even went as far as to be in the places one would never consider a Prince to visit, the better to find a hiding place none would think of looking. Now he was in one such places, pacing the nook of the Royal Gardens he had favorited since he was a child and trying to work off his temper before he happened across either one of his siblings or worse, a noble who could note it. Not for the first time, he thanked god and his clueless retainers for letting him have an opportunity to learn the castle like the back of his hand, for he did not think that his siblings were blessed with such a knowledge. Once again, he thanked his lady mother as well, for noting her son’s curiosity and directing it toward getting to know the castle and military strategy. Perhaps if he needed it, Tristan would be able to help his family out.
For now, though, he would have to calm down before making his way toward the dance his sister was organizing. Just what did his father think he was doing, arranging that marriage between his sister and the Prince of that country as a possible alliance? While rationally, he understood that it would benefit them to ally themselves with Sarcozsy, Tristan was of two minds as to the marriage itself, as Emmaline was not given any choice on the matter. Perhaps if he met the Prince for himself, he might be able to make a better judgement of the man’s character, but for now, Tristan found himself fuming on his sister’s behalf, though he retained wits enough not to do so where it was going to be without benefit. His losing his temper would not help his sister nor his position at court, though he was seriously considering it just to see what would happen. Speaking of which, he would have to watch his step now, else he might find himself engaged to some Lady or other, the one that was not of his liking. Shaking his head to clear his thoughts, the teen figured he might as well get ready for that masque and see what it brought. While he had no interest at engagement, or, god forbid, marriage, Tristan would have to be ready for whatever his father had in store for him and his siblings, however much he detested it. Unlooked for advantages were usually the best kind, after all.
