JASEN DE WINTER
Nickname - None
Gender - Male
Age - 28
Birthday - 12 January, 1511
Noble House: de Winter
Skills: Diplomacy, Strategy, Observation, Communication
Play By: Josh Dallas
Immediate Family Members:
Father: Ramsey de Winter, deceased.
Mother: Lirianne de Winter, deceased.
Siblings: Christopher, Sebastian, Katalin.
Personality
Calm and collected, Jasen makes no hasty judgements and keeps his opinions to himself. He trusts very few, his siblings among them, and may come across as aloof, as he prefers staying quiet unless his opinion is warranted. If he does have to make a decision, he tries his best to avoid conflict and stay in the zone of neutrality much preferred by his family, though he is still learning the ins and outs of politics. Despite the quiet nature, he has a forceful personality that is hard to miss and may seem as difficult to approach, though his siblings have no trouble at doing so, be it at court or at home.
Knowing that his words carry a weight, Jasen chooses them carefully, so there are definite pauses in his speech before he even starts talking. With his siblings, he takes the road his parents had taken with all of them in allowing them free choices at their occupations and supporting them if he can, though sometimes it’s a struggle to balance family and politics. He tends to consider everyone’s opinions before deciding on anything, and sometimes makes his own choices that he feels are the best for everyone concerned in a situation, though on occasion he will follow advice if he thinks it sound. He takes trouble to learn all he can about potential danger before visiting a place, and tends to be an observer rather than a participant, finding enjoyment at making mental notes on possible personalities from what he can see, but not drawing any conclusions until he has met the people he’d been observing in person several times.
Living at the border, he tends to be wary if he goes anywhere on his own and carry a weapon on his person at all times, due to the constant danger that surrounds his land from those outside his kingdom. He trusts his instincts, and he’s a proficient swordsman and archer. He also tends to work alongside his people, both to keep fit and keeping himself busy, as he dislikes idleness and there is always enough to do around his lands. Like his parents, Jasen often visits the town keep, though he tends to make his appearances at the capital rare, particularly so after their deaths. Among the first things he implemented was a strong communication network through which he learns all the events both in his lands and outside of them. Placing an effort on getting to know his people pays off in them being willing to help defend their borders, in turn ensuring the safety of his family and vassals.
History
As the eldest son of the family, Jasen was aware early on of the pressure he was going one day to end up with, so he used the time he had to learn all he could. The closest to his father as the heir to the family, he shadowed the Lord Oakdale as the man went about the business of the keep and the land. It often isolated him from the children his age, so the boy turned to his siblings once they were born. Throughout their childhood, the attention they paid to each other led to development of a strong bond that led them to rely on each other throughout the rest of their lives. While Jasen’s lessons and visits around the lands with his father led to less time spent with their siblings, he managed to make certain that all of them were protected and cared for, often providing a listening ear if needed and soothing ruffled feathers.
The diplomatic knowledge he unknowingly gained from these offered him support when his father decided he was old enough to begin solving conflicts among the people instead of just his siblings, which indeed proved even more so once he was old enough to be introduced to the court. Falling into a role of semi-active observer, Jasen had little trouble to keeping neutral like his father preferred, though it was a difficult going, for it seemed like everyone was trying to form alliances. Thus he managed to avoid majority of the traps and try learning from them, consulting his siblings to avoid making mistakes. Of course the latter still happened, but once done, the man did the best he could to avoid it again, sometimes consulting the books and his siblings, observing their actions and often staying up late to discuss days before.
Death of his parents had changed little for Jasen, aside from the fact that he was almost ready to follow his father’s footsteps. Having the need to pull out of grief earlier than his siblings, for he felt they needed him more than he needed to grieve, the man marshaled himself to ensure that both his siblings and his people had someone to lean on, leaning in turn on his brothers and sister to help him make a safety net around their lands so that the neighbors didn’t think of encroaching. When the time came, he fully supported their endeavors, helping Christopher and Katalin on their way to the capital and Sebastian to the university to attend to their duties, while he distracted himself further with creating a communication network that would allow him to learn everything happening in his lands and increasing a chance of safer borders. Keeping busy with improving the border safety for the people and the kingdom, Jasen had little time to attend to the capital aside from news his siblings delivered in their letters, thus becoming a rare figure at Court. Entreaty from Katalin and realization that he couldn’t pull everything by himself raised the question of marriage, which in turn led to preparations of returning. Still, he needed to make certain the borders were in safe hands first, so Jasen delayed the departure for as long as he could, until now.

The keep was far too quiet. Stretching as he walked the walls of his castle, Jasen carefully considered the unusual silence of the borders. He knew that there was trouble at the east, and as such, he supposed it made sense that the west was for now untroubled. Still, this inspection was a necessity, and a necessity still was to ensure that his eastern borders were well guarded in case whoever caused trouble reached this far into the kingdom. Then again, if so happened, Jasen suspected he was going to learn about it well before his army was going to enter into any skirmishes.
As it was, for now he had to make certain he and his people were ready in case they needed to be. Quietly walking toward the nearest guard on duty at this place, Jasen inclined his head in greeting toward the man before making his request, establishing with the man the time and place where the drill would be held. They would need a mobilization one in order to ensure their quick responses, as there was no standing army at the keep. In fact, none of them had a standing army, or should not. Frowning at the point, he allowed the man to go back to his current duties and strode toward his office, wondering where exactly the troublesome spots were at the moment. Thankfully, for now the borders remained quiet, and Jasen knew he would be notified the minute the peaceful state had changed, but for now there was time to consider his next steps, and perhaps to use it as excuse to visit his siblings.
Wondering at the turn his thoughts had taken, the man lightly shook his head, quietly amused at himself. He really should find something to do once he finished the inspection of the keep’s outer walls, as something was nagging at him to do so. He was used to trusting his instincts, and those instincts were insisting that there was a possible trouble somewhere, though for the moment, he could see nothing that would prove troublesome. Stopping at one of the points, he noted the weakened structure with a mild frown, making a note to strengthen the foundation the minute he could find the people to help him do so, for it would not do to have a weakness in the castle’s walls. After all, if tried hard enough, one could use the keep’s weakness against the inhabitants. Giving an amused expression, though none could see it, Jasen thought to himself that there was, after all, some use in occasional paying attention to one’s siblings specialties, and right this moment it had come in handy. List of things to do before departure in mind, the man retreated into the castle as briskly as he emerged, deciding that he was going to get started as soon as he found someone to help out, and aside from guards, the walls were deserted, which was just as well. Quiet or not, Jasen would rather not risk his people at the walls of the keep, as one never knew when things could go from quiet to unbearable, and that usually happened in seconds.
