General Overview of Law Enforcement in Demeria

The Kingdom of Demeria divides the responsibility for law enforcement between its nobility and commoners based on geography and to ensure a consistent measure of fairness towards all classes in the matter of justice. It is not a usual system for a feudal society, yet in the centuries the system has been in place, Demeria has been spared much of the civil unrest plaguing her neighbors.
Within Triadon, the responsibility for upholding the King's Peace is shared between the Royal Guard and the City Watch. The Royal Guard holds sway over the inner city, but will emerge to lend assistance to the City Watch as needed in keeping the more common areas patrolled and to assist in quelling insurrections or riots as needed, whereas the City Watch rarely crosses out of the Outer City.
Within the duchies, each ruling Duke maintains a small standing army and may establish a Watch within his City if he so chooses. If not, then the militant Order of the Church or a detachment of the Demerian Knights will patrol the city as needed. Outside of the city, Dukes may appoint Sheriffs to patrol parishes in conjunction with the Church knights to keep the
Vassal Lords are encouraged to establish Watches within their cities and assist their Duke in patrolling the countryside as needed.
The Royal Army is largely responsible for patrolling the highways of the realm, allowing travelers safe passage and quelling any who would take advantage of the occasional stretches of isolated roads to inflict robbery and other mayhem. They also will intervene if needed in conflicts between duchies as a neutral force, and in times of war, will serve to protect and defend the realm.
