Personality
Darton is an easy going fellow, determined to enjoy life and all that it has to offer from fine wines to good food to a well-made sword and a lovely woman. He enjoys his status as confidante and protector of the Crown Prince, but is wise enough never to take it, or Riordan, for granted. If anything, he is fiercely protective of the Prince and members of the royal family, if somewhat aloof from his own.
He frequently wears an easy smile, walks with a ground-devouring gait. A man of simple tastes, he does possess the appropriately courtly manners, an understanding of protocol and precedence, and the ability to render himself all but invisible. Darton may seem laid back and relaxed, but that can change in a heartbeat if he detects a threat to his Prince, or if tension is mounting.
A fierce warrior, he is skilled with daggers and bow equally, preferring twin poniards over the traditional sword. He does possess skill with the longsword and a broad blade, as well as use of shield, but as his battlefield tends to be in close quarters, Darton prefers maneuverability. He is a disciplined man despite his proclivities for good food and drink, rising at dawn to get in weapons practice and challenges himself constantly to learn a new weapon or a new style. He is also a skilled rider, trained in some basic field medical skills, survival and tracking.
Within Darton there is a core of loneliness. He is not close with the deLac family, despite the presence of his cousin Thomas in the capitol, and often wishes to alter that but does not know how. He worries he will be blamed for the sins of his parents and thus keeps himself at arm's length rather than risk being hurt. Bound to his duty, he does not see a wife or children in his future.
History
Born the only child to Richard de Lac and Deirdre Peveril de Lac, Darton spent most of his formative years in Triadon. Richard was estranged from his family for wedding for no better reason than love, and struggled to make his way in the world as a tutor and instructor. His lady was sickly despite his best efforts to keep her in physicians and medicines, dying when Darton was only two.
Richard sat his son down, speaking to the little boy as if he were already a man. They would struggle together, their belts would have to tighten, they might go hungry sometimes, but they were together and they'd make it. The child accepted his father's words gravely and bore the truth almost manfully. If he cried in the night, his father was there without a word of censure and no speech of it in the morning.
He received his education from the church schools, learning to read and write, arithmetic and natural sciences. As was normal, Darton participated in the games taught to the children during the periods for physical exertion, where he excelled. The boy showed signs of excellent hand-eye coordination, balance and agility, drawing the eye of the Order member who culled out those to serve in the Order's military. He deemed the boy worthy of higher training and soon Darton found himself enrolled in the military aspect of the Order's schools.
Tested frequently, he did not always succeed; Darton proved hopeless with a rapier and a pike. He was inept with a polearm, but took to the bow and dagger as if born to them. Though he received standard instruction in sword and shield, jousting and horse-back combat, it was rapidly made clear to the boy's instructors that he did better in close-quarter fighting. They adjusted his training accordingly, adding in tactics, strategies, but also some of the darker aspects of combat. One Church Knight finally revealed why when Darton was twelve - "The best means of defeating an assassin is to know the assassin's tricks."
At fifteen, he was tested again, this time by three members of the King's Royal Guard. They took him from the Military School and enrolled him in the Guard. He welcomed the new challenges presented to him, not realizing the task for which he'd been chosen until they presented him along with ten other young men to the Crown Prince. From there, Darton found himself singled out to be the Prince's guard; he did not expect to become Riordan's closest friend, but welcomed the friendship as the only true family he claims.

Swinging down from the saddle, he extended a hand to receive Riordan's reins, intending to tether their horses off to the side where they could graze and reach the water easily while the two men took their ease on the shore. "It would be nice, but someone would be bound to point out that we wouldn't appreciate them so well if they were common." A toothy grin flashed over his shoulder at the prince as he untied the saddlebags and tossed them over his shoulder, heading back to where Riordan stood.
"If you don't mind me asking, why the lake? It's not your usual haunt," the knight demanded with the ease of long-time camaraderie and good fellowship. In Riordan Darton had indeed found a brother in arms and of heart despite the lack of shared blood between them. The de Lacs were a minor house at best; his place as personal guard to the Crown Prince was as much the beneficence of Fate as it was the skill with his steel. "But still, it's a good change. I was beginning to feel hunted the longer we stayed in the castle. Court's proving... interesting in all the wrong and interesting ways this season."
