Personality
Ever since he was young, Nikolai has accepted his duty as heir and decided to find the most enjoyable method of becoming the ruler his parents wished him to be. He was prone to the habit of eavesdropping and realized that it often gave him information he could use. So he continued. He craved attention and learned to read people to get the reaction he wanted, when he can be bothered. If he really tries, then he will practically stalk someone until they give him everything that is useful, otherwise he eavesdrops on them every once in a while.
For all the information he gathers from others, he rarely reveals anything about himself. He has a deep love and joy for playing the flute and reading poetry in a couple of different languages. Not only does he learn secrets from others, but makes a point to learn songs as well. He looks forward to his trip to Demeria to gather folk songs and poetry.
He is not close to his immediate family because he realized that intimacy is not as important as duty. Therefore, he ensures his younger siblings are doing all they can to be useful to the family. One of the only personal activities he does with any of them is to play music. Playing instruments with his family members is how he shows he cares for them.
As he has had military experience with his uncle and Alexei has taken the time to teach him, Nikolai respects and trusts him. If Nik has a problem, he will go to his uncle. Otherwise, he muses it over himself because he has difficulty trusting people.
History
Nikolai was the first son born to Anatoli and Ekaterina Fyodorov in the fall of 1518. Soon after he was born, the uprising that plagued Anatoli's lifetime ended thanks to Nikolai's uncle Alexei. As the heir and only son for the first year of Nikolai's life, his parents spoiled him with gifts and attention, which was to be changed as soon as Demetri's birth a year later. Nikolai received a more serious form of attention from his parents and everyone else, not to his liking. Already at an early age, Nikolai learned (mostly subconsciously at first) that if he behaved and spoke in a certain way, he would learn valuable information and receive the attention he wanted.
With his sister Anastiasia born three years after him and Katya two years after her, Nikolai took his role as elder brother to heart. He did his best to uphold a proper image of what the crown prince and eldest brother should look like, assisting his siblings when they needed it and ensuring they focused on their studies and duties as was expected of him.
Nikolai started to train with his uncle in the military arts and strategy when he was old enough, helping with some of the smaller tasks that needed to be done. As a result, he earned enough military experience over the years to about a Lietenant level. He trusts and respects his uncle, fighting alongside him firsthand and knowing that Alexei is the best person to be in charge of the Sarkoszy Royal Army.
His engagement to one of the princesses of Demeria did not surprise him, nor was it unwanted. He always knew that marriage was imminent and is prepared to fulfill his duty, although he hopes that the princess is not dull. Cementing ties and loyalty in the kingdom of Demeria is one of his top priorities, as it is expected of him and will benefit his own kingdom's influence. As usual, his quest to familiarize himself with the people, secrets, and useful information has begun.

Nikolai finished playing the flute solo, lowered the instrument and placed it back in its case. Practice went well and as always, allowed him peace of mind, if only for a little while. He left the room and moved with quiet steps down the hallway. His indoor house shoes had softer soles than the other members of his household, allowing for him to wander without most people hearing him. Helpful for eavesdropping and allowing him the element of surprise.
He had had a conversation with his father about his upcoming trip to Demeria, where he was to meet his fiancee. That was fine, as long as she was not too dull. Even if she was, he would adapt and use the situation to his advantage. All he could do.
While he was there, he would have to meet other members of the court, cement his allies early, and learn any lovely songs for the flute. If he was truly honest with himself, that was most important. He needed - desired - to enrinch his soul.
No, he told himself, thinking of his duty to his house. He would do everything for his family first, prove he was worth their trust, and then he could do what he wanted.
He needed to pack clothes and his flute for the trip, as they were most necessary. There was also the matter of finding an appropriate gift for the princess. What would be something suitable for his fiancee, but still have a personal touch? Nikolai racked his mind for something and finally decided on a special poem for her, as well as a necklace of silver and rubies -- he had heard that she had dark hair and that would suit her. Nothing too audacious or gaudy, of course, because he preferred a woman in his presence to be classy. It was only right.
