Seated in his study, Spencer sipped the fine claret obtained from the Rose vineyards and perused the report from his steward. The time to depart for Triadon was soon and with it, the start of a plan long in the conceiving. His daughter was as prepared as she could be, and he himself? He intended to be well armed with information regarding his fellow Dukes, their heirs and pertinent items of trade. If for some reason his grandiose plan failed, he was prepared to adjust accordingly.
There was more, however, he noted in the sheaf of reports from his steward. The man included mention of increasing raids on the coast by that notorious group of pirates. Now, the steward, noted, they were growing bold enough to land ashore. And that meant only one thing - they expanded their operations to dabble in smuggling. Interesting, though he wondered in turn what items were being smuggled, and were they being smuggled into Demeria, or out?
Making a few notes, he grimaced with the realization that he would have to speak with St. Claire about this. As the two with the greatest amount of coastline, the smuggling operations directly affected the Duchy of Twinport as much as it did Indigane. That also meant investigating his vassals to be sure neither the Salwick nor the Ormonde were involved. If they were, there would be hell to pay for such betrayal. Spencer Lancaster tolerated no such dishonor or disloyalty from those who owed their lands and their lives to his House.
He could be a generous lord, a good friend, but as some had occasion to learn, the Lord of Indigane was an imprudent, vicious and cruel enemy. The smugglers, whether Demerian or otherwise, were about to discover just how true that was.
