Personality
The youngest of the four de Winter siblings and the only girl, Katalin grew up knowing what it meant to have extremely overprotective brothers. Trained to follow in her mother’s footsteps as physician to the Royal ladies, she is a reflection of her mother in many ways – small, reserved, focused (even a little driven) and competent. Whereas her brothers have a plethora of interests and occupations, she is happiest when working in her greenhouse or stillroom.
Despite that, Katalin possesses a dry sense of humor and keenly honed wits – one has to with three older brothers, each of whom is convinced he knows what is best for you! She is especially close with Sebastian, the youngest, as they are nearest in age and habit. Studious and observant, she is not overly concerned with gossip, fashion, who’s who in the court or the game of politics.
Regardless, Katalin possesses a lady’s manners and the basic understanding of the game, even if she doesn’t play it. Devoted to her duty, she is less likely to be involved in much of anything. In some ways, Katalin – or Katie, as her brothers call her – is almost shy, prone to blushing uncomfortably when attention is on her or she makes a faux pas, which is a little too often for her liking.
A loving sister, a faithful friend and a gentle lady… that is Katalin de Winter.
History
After three healthy, rambunctious boys, Ramsay and Lirianne de Winter were all too delighted when their fourth and final child proved to be the daughter Lirianne desperately craved. A truly happy, close-knit family, the Duke and Duchess took great pride in their children, each of whom proved to display their own unique talents. In Katalin, Lirianne noticed her daughter’s interest in herbs, the healing arts and tending to the sick and wounded from an early age.
As Duchess of Oakdale, Lirianne took the welfare of the people seriously, often tending to the sick of the villages and city herself. Much to her surprise, her tiny daughter refused to be left behind but insisted on toddling along. She indulged little Katie, thinking the child would soon tire of the work and go off to play, only to discover the opposite. Katalin proved a swift learner with a gentle, caring touch and a knack for soothing the suffering of others.
Taking that as a sign of her daughter’s path, the Duchess began to train her daughter in earnest, instructing her in the cultivation, harvest and preservation of medicinal herbs, the compounding of medicines and their correct application with the eventual intention that the girl would replace her as physician to the ladies of the Royal House. In time, Katalin expanded her education to learn the arts of bone-setting, midwifery and some surgery, ignoring the protests from the male surgeon she apprenticed to.
Growing up with three brothers was not easy, but they also did not hesitate to seek her out when injured or ill, allowing Katalin to stay close to them, something that sustained her when first her father died from a heart attack, shortly followed by her mother after a brief illness. The deaths, sudden and shocking as they were, reminded the four de Winters just how crucial family was and how desperately they needed to stay together.
Appointed to replace her mother in Triadon, Katalin now resides in Carlisle Castle as a member of the royal household. Though she misses her quieter, simpler life in Oakdale, she hopes to do good work and to maintain the health of the Carlisle ladies as capably as her mother.

The Ward played host to the minstrel brought back to the city with those who'd visited the village, a private room set aside for those patients who either needed to be quarantined or else required peace and privacy. In the hopes of persuading Girard that it wasn't a cell, he could come and go about the Ward and the snow-coated healing gardens as he pleased, but she checked on him several times a day, bringing meals and a little company at the behest of the order, who hoped she could win the poor man's trust. Told something of his story, the physician was sympathetic to Girard's plight and so when asked to talk with him, she agreed with no promise of success. Bringing a pot of tea and some of the cookies that the Novices baked earlier, she knocked softly on the door to his room.
"Milk and tea." She smiled as she set the tray down and eased the door closed, an unmistakable signal to any in the Ward that the physician was with her patient and thus not to be disturbed except on threat of major catastrophe. The small table was drawn closer to the bed and a chair for herself as she lifted the napkin off the tray to reveal the glass, pot and cups, and of course, the plate full of cookies. Somehow the simplest little pleasures could have a complex effect and she wasn't above appealing to Girard's response to human kindness. "How are your ribs feeling?" Ointment and cool compresses were on his chart's orders to help, along with a mild pain tisane. As for the Enforcer, he was greeted by one of the orderlies, who informed him that the physician was with the minstrel for his next treatment. When Lady Katalin was done, then Firen could speak with Girard. He was invited to take his ease in one of the small rooms set for the purpose of waiting.
