Personality
A tall man, Dominic Halton can change moods at a moment's notice. One minute, he'll be sober as a judge, the next he'll throw his head back and laugh uproariously at a joke. At thirty-three, he's been lord of his holding for close to six years, and takes his role as Baron of Birchspire seriously. Living on Demeria's western border is no laughing matter.
A skilled archer, he was all but raised with a bow in his hand. There is little that Dominic cannot hit with an arrow when he aims his bow, something that is extremely useful when it comes to Artonian spies who attempt to slither over his borders. Dom believes in being prepared, and that the best Imperial spy is a dead one, he trains his troops to watch vigilantly, to stand their duty loyally and defend their Baron, their Duke, and their King to the last breath in their bodies. Halton will not be caught off-guard under Dominic's rule, especially as the Duke of Oakdale is still fairly new to his role.
That doesn't mean Dom's perfect. In fact, he's far from it. Occasionally moody, he is sometimes prone to depression. Living on the border is not easy, and near-constant vigilance exacts a heavy toll if he is not careful. Concern for the Duke and his family, coupled with his efforts to protect what is his and to impress on the rest of Demeria just how grave a threat the Empire can be all work to occasionally send him a little too deep into the bottle. Only his mother's gentle warnings, and the looks on his siblings' faces remind him that drowning in ale is not a viable option.
Aware as well that he needs a wife, Dominic is no ladies' man. He doesn't flirt. He's awkward around the ladies, and he isn't sure what kind of wife would make the best Baroness and Lady of Birchspire. Politics annoy him, but he knows they are inescapable for a man of his rank and title. He also has siblings to see on their way into the world.
Despite that, he's proud of his heritage, striving to be the solid, strong man his father was, an appropriate Lord of Birchspire and a faithful vassal to Lord de Winter. Dominic knows what it means to be a Halton, and he will not disappoint his name.
History
Born the eldest of seven children to Michael and Delia Halton, Dominic was raised at his father's right hand to understand the responsibilities of the Lord of Birchspire. A healthy, sturdy little boy, he was given his first bow at age five, taught to shoot straight and true in the forests and hills of Birchspire. Archery is in the Halton bloodline, from the crafting of the bow and the fletching of arrows, to the precision of marksmanship. He was also taught to ride, a necessary function for a nobleman so that lands could be inspected.
Given military training from an equally young age, Dominic's education was overseen by both parents. From his father, he learned what a future baron needed to know in managing lands and money, putting the skills of his people to their best uses and the intricacies of jurisprudence. From his mother, he learned other languages, calligraphy, music and agricultural management, as she was of a lowborn family under the Fontaines. Dominic was also swift to understand that rank took second place to ability. A border Baron could not afford snobbery when lives were at stake.
As he grew, improving his skills in archery and riding, he also welcomed siblings into the fold. Each had their own skills to contribute to the family, and Dom helped to encourage this so that there might not be rivalries. There was enough rivalry between the Haltons and the Marbury family, despite both serving as vassals to de Winter. His father and the Marbury earl had once come to blows over the Lady Halton, a taboo subject never discussed.
Regardless, he was devastated when his father died at the hands of the Artonese during a raid on the border to test its strengths. Though he did not have time to grieve, Dominic pulled himself together for the sake of the family who depended on him, leading a company of men to quell the uprising and restore a measure of peace. Six years and numerous skirmishes later, he was present at the battle where the old Duke lost his life despite his best efforts to protect the man. As one of the first to swear fealty to Jasen, Dominic also strives to serve the new Duke as friend and advisor, aware that the great game of politics is no man's friend.

The decision was made to travel to Triadon, despite his initial misgivings and the dubious expressions of his siblings. His mother, however, proved a quiet support in the matter, reassuring him they would be fine. If Lord de Winter had need of his vassal, then he should go. Patrols would continue, Ben could handle the day-to-day matters of Birchspire, and she and his sisters would keep the home-fires burning. It was time he accepted the other side of being Baron - the Courtly side.
Never one to rely on servants when he could do for himself, Dominic stood in his rooms - the ones that had once belonged to his father but now were his by right of inheritance - and scowled down at the trunk. He knew he needed to fill it with the finer linen and velvet doublets his womenfolk were good enough to sew (and he seldom wore), yet his hands itched for the coarse linen tunic and the chain mail he typically wore when drilling the men and riding the lands. Dom was a working man, not some namby-pamby nobleman to prance around the court. Realizing how much his thoughts sounded like his father's, he chuckled to himself and began to pack.
Triadon... it had been years since he'd last set foot in the Royal Court. The place made the space between his shoulders itch, it was so full of backstabbing, gossip and ne'erdowells, but it didn't change the fact that it was time a Halton took a place there. Resigned to the fact, Dom could only hope he didn't make a fool of himself. It would be a good opportunity, if he chose to look at it that way, or so he reminded himself. His siblings needed spouses (as did himself, but that wasn't the point), their lands could use another detachment of guards, and the list went on.
Dammit, it was an opportunity. A good one. And it was time to get on with it.
