Richard Peveril is all of these words and more. He is focused, detailed and precise in every phase of his plots, from planning to execution. He trusts none except of his family, and even then his trust is cautiously given. In his mind, he is the only one he can trust, rely upon to accomplish what needs to be done, and bring the House to the glory it deserves. He bears a stringent hatred for the Carlisles, seeing them as traitors and dissidents against their rightful lord, the Artonian Emperor.
His vanity is great, such that he dresses to reflect the power he intends to wield. In his agreements with the Artonian Conclave, Richard negotiated asylum for his House, amnesty for his name... and the throne of Demeria for himself in exchange for bringing the downfall of the Carlisles to pass. There is nothing he wants more than to sit upon the throne as a regional governor, compelling Princess Emmaline to his wife and siring the newest leadership of Demeria as it returns to the Artonian fold.
Some say he is gone mad, that ambition has turned to mania and dismissed all sense of logic from his mind. As far as he is concerned, genius and madness walk hand in hand, and without both, greatness cannot be achieved. Death is the only thing that will stop him. In his mind, however, he will live forever.
History
Once of Arton, the Peveril family has always maintained dual loyalties. That is, until Richard Peveril was born. The eldest of the current generation, he developed an early and fierce stance that his House needed to return to the Imperial fold. Under the Empire, House Peveril would be restored to its former greatness and power, rather than forced to submit to an overlord who was a mere female. A weak female at that.
Educated by a father who resented his de Vere lieges in the arts of deception, scheming and treachery in his own rights, Richard was indoctrinated early. Business across the border acquainted him with the various powers in Arton, all of whom were far too willing to fuel the fire kindled in the passionate youth's breast. Rewards, he was told, would be rich and varied if he worked on their behalf. Encouraged by his father, his mother made no effort to restrain them. She'd been too often terrorised by her husband to lift a finger in protest.
Much of his young life and education took place in Arton, where he was taught to think as an Artonian, to speak their language, fight in their methods and groomed to scheme appropriately. At the age of thirty, now Lord of Peveril in his own right, Richard was approached with the foundations of the plot that would consume the entirety of his focus and become the lodestar by which he lived. If he could help overthrow the Carlisles and restore Demeria to its proper place within the Empire, he would be named regional governor and granted all the titles, properties and power that accompanied it.
Eagerly, he accepted, and started down the path that would either bring glory or ruin to his House forever. Enlisting only those few members of his family whom he felt he could trust, armed with an exotic poison, Richard ensured a hold over one of the King's servants to begin feeding him the means to first discredit, then eliminate the King. The Crown Prince was fed a steady diet of beautiful, sensuous women to distract and exhaust him from his duties. The older Princess was dismissed; she was wedded to one of the dukes and no longer a concern. The younger Prince could be subverted... if Richard could get to him. As for Emmaline... she was to be the last reward, legitimising his claim on Demeria as governor.
However, recent events compel him to come to Triadon to take a more personal hand in matters before the plan goes to ruin. He has come to see this through or die trying.

The net was closing in. They were getting gradually closer to discovering the poison that was stealing away the life of the King. It had been an ideal choice, a poison comprised of four components so that three of the ingredients could be safely consumed by every resident of the castle, yet the fourth was available only to the King and whomever else might be in need of removal as an obstacle to the plan.
The plan was so perfect... until interference arrived in the form of various meddlesome and too-intelligent persons, persons who recognised the alternative effects of the poison. They would need to be removed, of course, distracted before they uncovered the fourth component. Too close, too close... and the plan could not be ended. The Emperor was relying upon success, and it was nearly within reach.
Fury sent an arm sweeping across the desk as papers and other objects flew heedlessly about, though a deep breath slowly restored calm. Plans were subject to change, therefore this one would change accordingly. It would expand to incorporate the removal of that meddlesome bitch Fiona, and her little pet physician. Her mother had been disposed of; the girl would be no challenge. An attack on her older brother, a discredit of the younger. Some poison for her as well.
As for Fiona, the distraction was simple. Attack those whom she cared about - Emmaline, Serah, Spencer Lancaster. Use the de Vere girl, if possible, though that would be challenging to accomplish courtesy of that bastard spy uncle of hers.
No, calm. Calm. Breathe. One obstacle at a time. Advance the plot. Remove the King. Destroy the Carlisles. Discredit the de Winters. And open the door to the Emperor.
All of this could be accomplished... one thing at a time.
Out of Character:
Anne - Hail to the King, the Daffodil, and others - Eastern
Just what I need. Another character. A fine thing that he is temporary!
