Personality
Fully aware of who she is and what she wants, Julia St. Claire is not the first of Lord Daven St. Claire’s four daughters for nothing. As the eldest, she has been groomed to marry the Crown Prince, but that is a task better suited to her sister Lynesse. Julia has her eyes on another prize – the title of Duchess of Twinport. A shrewdly intelligent, calculating and independent young woman, she has her father’s gilded coloring, her mother’s delicate beauty and the iron will that has bolstered the St. Claire family for years. What she aims at, Julia hits, no matter how many times she must try.
Stubborn is a pale, pale description of her personality. Logical to a fault, she can and will argue her point until her opponent surrenders. She views each action as an investment in the future and the protection of House St. Claire. As far as Julia is concerned, there is only one name she wishes to bear, and that is St. Claire. She’s not interested in being the pretty puppet that is the Queen, not when she can expend her skills and energy in the promotion of Twinport and the family agenda.
Her mother died before any marriage arrangement could be sealed, leaving the management of house, father and sisters in her hands. Julia runs all three with almost military precision, yet she is neither cold nor unapproachable. If anything, she loves her father and sisters dearly, but she knows too well how easily all of them could succumb to the grief caused by the loss of Helena Marbury St. Claire. Thus, her sisters are kept busy at ladylike tasks and matters that adequately groom them for appropriate marriages; her father is prodded into activity daily. She often attends his meetings with the stewards, magistrates and the nobles of their vassal houses. Julia is a woman who shares her father’s stance in that action speaks louder than words, yet she also knows how important words can be. It is her strength, bolstering what she perceives as a slight weakness on Daven’s part.
No matter what, Julia is fiercely loyal to House St. Claire and protective as a mama bear to her sisters. She owes it to their mother to see that there is not a whiff of impropriety about them, that they are the refined, elegant and beautiful young ladies Helena expected them to be, and that they conduct themselves with the utmost decorum at all times. Anything less is simply unacceptable for a St. Claire. Especially its future Duchess.
History
The eldest of Daven and Rosemary St. Claire's four girls, Julia was born and raised with the understanding that she was destined to hold a role in the future of Demeria. Even as a small girl, she was given every lesson, every instruction in the graces, styles, manners and skills of the future Queen, fitting into the ages-old tradition that when she was of sufficient age, she would be the Crown Prince's bride.
Unfortunately for the Duke and Duchess, that was not the future little Lady Julia had in mind, especially when it became clear that the Duchess could only produce girls. Having three little sisters meant she was equal parts example and shepherd, guiding Lynesse, Rosalie and Cecilia along the awkward path to womanhood. Having rivals in the form of cousins, Julia developed a thick hide at a very early age, knowing that her aunt's sons and those of her uncle felt the need to lord it over the ducal children, presuming one of them would be selected as Daven's heir if the Duchess failed in her duty. Dealing with the little snot-nosed brats planted the seed of ambition in Julia.
If her mother could not produce a son, then she would be the duchess. Let one of her sisters become Queen. She intended to preserve and protect House St. Claire, and make it her own some day. With that resolve, she turned her hand to learning land management, some strategy and tactics, jurisprudence and the economics of running a Duchy. The information interested her, and with the Duke's steward indulging her, Julia learned quickly, knowing that time was not on her side.
As if her thoughts turned predictions, her mother fell ill when Julia was ten and passed away, leaving the Duke's hopes for a son dashed. Aware of how deeply her father's grief at the loss of her mother extended, she put childhood away and took her place as acting Lady of the House. Someone, she knew, had to keep the family together, oversee her sisters' education and ensure her father did not follow her mother into the grave. The need for early maturation gave Julia some sharp edges, most of which were used on her father to keep him moving, thinking and acting, rather than giving up. He had four daughters who needed him.
Fortunately for the St. Claires, the family remains close despite the natural rivalries between the sisters, and the need to choose futures for them. Julia has been patient with her father until recently, but time is running out and he must decide not only for himself, but for his four girls, what the future will hold.

"Lyn! Rose! Cecile! Let's go! We'll be late!"
Calling up the stairs to her sisters, Julia sighed impatiently, crossing her arms over her chest and tapping a slippered foot. The family was expected to attend the Festival of the Tides, opening the Festival for the people and already their father had roared about his daughters' tendencies towards tardiness. She'd done her best to make sure they had as little reason to tarry as possible, ensuring their dresses and shoes were laid in readiness, they were scooted off to bathe and dress at an early hour and that the maids were on hand to held them.
Not that it mattered. They were up there, chattering and giggling like a flock of twittering birds. Trying not to roll her eyes, she glanced over to Daven and tried not to wince at the look on his face. A sheepish smile was sent his way before she gathered her skirts and marched firmly up the steps. Down the hall she went to the room where the three of them were no doubt clustered, fussing with their hair and perfume. As she reached the door, Julia balled a fist and let it fall like the hammer of God on the wood three times.
"If you do not come out of there immediately, you will get to tell Father and the entire city of Twinport just how sorry you are for being later. I will give you until the count of three. One..." She heard the whispering stop and a telltale clatter as bodies rushed into movement, adding ominously, "Twoooo..."
When the door flew open and her sisters tumbled out to race down the hall, Julia allowed herself one small, smug smile. Father couldn't have done better himself.
